Did the sales guy use the same DVD-RW that you did? Maybe the brand you are using is not of good quality and can not be recognized by the recorder. If he did not use the same disc did you notice if he used DVD-RW or DVD+RW? Some DVD-Recorders only recognize one or the other but this is kind of rare these days. I recommend verbatim brand discs. They should be available for sale at any shop. If you want the ultimate in quality DVDs then go with Taiyo Yuden. This Japanese brand invented recordable media and in addition to that they are obsessed with quality. www.supermediastore.com is always where I get my discs.

Recording from VHS to DVD

It is only a DVD player, you can't record with it. You can only record on VHS tape.

DVD recorded discs (from VHS) do not play on other dvd players

I called the manufacturer. They admitted to improper instructions. They provided me a fix to their copying protocol and it worked. Also, they game me instructions on how to fix already copied tapes. It works well and I would have to say I was impressed with their customer/technical service.

Have a samsung Samsung LE26A456C and a toshiba dvd recorder. Have set up telly fine, set up video to play fine but cannot record

What is it that you are trying to record? If you are trying to record a DVD you have purchased onto a DVD-R, you will almost always run into a problem because most purchased DVDs have copyright codes burned into them, making them unrecordable. Most VHS tapes have these copyright protection codes in them as wel. If you are trying to record a television show, and are unable to do so, make sure that the DVD that you are using is compatible with your burner. If your burner is set up to record only DVD-R, then you must use only the DVD-R discs. If your burner is set up to record only DVD+R, then you must use only the DVD+R discs. Some burners will record both the DVD-R and DVD+R. If you have the right discs for your burner, make sure that the discs are correctly formatted to be recorded. Also, make sure that if you are recording from a cable box or other input that you have the correct unput channel selected on the burner. If these suggestions don't work, then it could be the brand of DVD that you have purchased (i.e. Sony,Maxell,TDK,Fuji,etc.). Check your manual for acceptable brands. I hope this helps you out. Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Purchased a Samsung SH855 DVD Recorder with 250gb Hard drive, this is now my 4th unit that that I have changed over from Harvey Norman for various issues, this unit now has the same problem as the first,...

Did the return yesterday. They plugged it in and did a playback in the shop to check what I meant. They claimed to be surprised. Anyway got my new unit home and was testing it out. It seemed to have the same problem. Meanwhile the sales guy rang to say they had tried it in the shop and that it might be my reception.

I got a reception booster and so far it has recorded what i have programmed. Playback quality is still a bit patchy at times.
Now I have to think about my next move.

Samsung DVD-SH855

Hi Thanks to all. Problem was solved by my son who suggested that I turn the unit off in standby mode. Samsung DVD-SH855 will not record via timer settings when the unit is left with pwr on. Only works if pwr switched off.
Had I known this prior to purchasing I would have purchased a brand that worked with pwr on.

Samsung DVD Recorder R155

Sounds like you recorded from a camcorder attached to AV2 (front of DVD player). Press the STOP button, then open the menu and finalize the disk.

SAMSUNG HR733 DVD RECORDER WILL NOT PLAY ANY REGION DISCS AT ALL

On page 45 of the user manual it says this:

Both the HDD & DVD RECORDER and the discs are coded
by region. These regional codes must match in order for the
disc to play. If the codes do not match, the disc will not play.
The Region Number for this HDD & DVD RECORDER is
described on the rear panel of the HDD & DVD RECORDER

If you changed the region codes on your player it will not work. They should be set back to 1 or whatever your model says on the back of the unit.

If this unit was purchased outside the United States, it may not work in the United States.

Here is a copy of the manual if you need it:
