The issue may be from some kinda incompatibility with the operation system or a virus from the computer ...Try to reset the camera by using the reset button if it has one ..or removing all power source from it ..(batteries or ac adapter ) ..
restart it and see if it gets back ..
in the future try to use a a card reader and get the files from the sd card directly in the computer ..
There is a possibility that you need to select from the camera screen the type of connection on usb ...cause it may have 2 of them ..like charging from usb ..and pc connection for download...

It's the power source, believe it or not. Such a simple solution. Taking out the batteries and immediately placing them back into the camer will "reset" and allow the camera to function again. This step may have to be performed each time to enable the use of the camera. Lame, isn't it? Thank you!
