The speed is controlled by a capacitor bank ... high speed uses no capacitors, low speed uses a small capacitor in series with the motor and medium speed uses a larger capacitor ... the pull chain switch selects which capacitor is used ... so if the capacitors go bad or if the switch fails to select them then you will not have low and medium speed ... so you could have a bad speed capacitor block or a bad switch or wiring that has come loose inside the fan (that connects the capacitors) .. all are replaceable .. i would first remove the covers from the fan and check all wire connections .. check the switch to see if it operates smoothly .. then suspect the capacitor block .. if you were an electrician then you could bypass the switch to test its function but if you are not then make sure power is off while working on the fan .. you should be able to get a new capacitor block from the manufacturer .. most are similar if they will phisically fit in the fan housing and have the same connectors ..

Harbor breeze fan remote

If the fan has a pull chain then push the Hi button and then pull the chain until it's on high. Then don't pull the chain! If that's not your problem then check the capacitor in the fan.

Ceiling fan stuck on low

in order for the remote control to work properly the fan has to be on its highest speed using the pull chain ... after setting the pull chain in the proper position you can tie up the chain or remove it to prevent others from changing the setting .. the remote will control the speed from then on ..

Hampton Bay Windward II Purchased 2002 The fan has lost high speed. Low speed and medium speed work fine. When the fan is turned on to high speed it runs at medium speed. When switched from high to medium...

Most fans have a small rectangular multi-tap capacitor connected to the speed control in the fan. It is likely that this has gone partially bad. The capacitance values are printed on it. Lighting stores and big box hardware stores generally carry replacements.

No middle speed.

Replacing the pull switch (reostat) should have solved your problem. Try going to the internet at www.google.com and in the Google search box enter "Hampton Bay Fans homepage". If any of these suggestions have been helpfull, please rate my solution. Thanks D. Lange

3-speed switch replaced with hampton bay switch. Only low speed works.

The cause to the problem was replacing a HUNTER fan switch with a Hampton Bay switch. Before removing the old switch, I noted and marked the color and position of the 4 wires. I then duplicated the connections to the new switch.

But the wire positions of Hampton Bay vs Hunter are not identical, therefore 2 wires
were crossed.

The correct way is to note the color of the wires with the corresponding NUMBER
marked on the switches, then duplicate this on the new one.

Hampton Bay 54 In. 5-Blade with remote control at wall.

1. Set the remote to run the fan on high.
2. Pull the fan speed chain until the fan reaches high speed.
3. All speeds should work normally now.
The remote is modulating the maximum speed as set by the pull chain.
