Hi, I have been trying to install the PC game 'Missing:Since January' on my laptop running Vista Home. From the adverts for the game I have seen on ebay it seems to but suitable for Vista but once I install and the game attempts to start up I get the two following errors poping up and then the program closes down once OK is pressed.
Error 1:
Erreur du lecteur Director
The file C:PROGRA~1THEADV~1MissingMissing.exe is not a director file.
Error 2:
Erreur du lecteur Director
Impossible de charger l'animation: C:PROGRA~1THEADV~1MissingMissing.exe
Any help on fixing this issue would be appreciated. I have looked at the Adventure company games website but there is nothing on this issue only info on a patch which was released to update the webserver info (I have installed this but its made no difference).
Thanks

If it's running in XP but not in Vista then try this..
Goto the shortcut on the desktop, right click it.
Goto Properties, and select Comptability
Select Run in XP SP2 Compatability mode and press Apply then OK
Try to run the game again.

Ahh you still have big brother watching your every move hehe
You can disable that and try it as well. The UAC has been known to cause problems in some games.
Goto Start - Run
Type "msconfig"
Goto the last tab in the window that pops up
Scroll down till you find Turn UAC off and select launch.
You will need to restart after that, but the annoying "do you want to do this..no really do you want to do this..are you really reallllly sure you want to do this" box will be gone =)
I am somewhat bemused why the game is giving the errors in Dos format instead of using long filenames.
Try to uninstall the game.
Reinstall it, but select your own location to install. So something like C:\Missing
Not sure if this will help or not, but follow this link and about 1/2 way down the page there is a posting by infernoj13usa
Ok, lets try it the hard way =)
Unistall Macromedia and that hideous program Quicktime.
Go into Program files and delete any remnants from the computer. Just delete the whole folder it was installed into.
Get a registry cleaner and run that to remove all the garbage those programs have left behind.
Now install the programs again, but start with the versions included on the CD.

Did you recieve the original CD\DVD - it seems like a pirated copy - please confirm if it is licensed software and we can take it from there.

Hi, I can confirm - it is a brand new copy - only had it 3 days. It works fine on XP but not on Vista. I have looked in the booklet which comes with the 2 cd's but that does not help either.
Thanks
Dom
Hi Mark,
Thanks for the quick reply. I have already tried this and running the program as administrator but I still get the same two errors. One other point I forgot to mention was that a small shield type icon is also displaying on the 'Missing' icon on the desk top and when I double click it to start up the program a 'do I allow this program to run' dialog box appears. Once I click its ok to continue then the errors occur.
Thanks
Hi Mark,
Done that. The little shield and the warning box has gone but the game is still producing the same two errors.
Dom
While you have been away I have just tried installing into my documents area and stiil no difference. The errors which are appearing are:
Error 1: (In a pop up message box)
Erreur du lecteur Director
The file C:\Users\Dominic\Documents\Missing\Missing.exe is not a director file.
Error 2: (also in popup message box)
Erreur du lecteur Director
Impossible de charger l'animation:
C:\Users\Dominic\Documents\Missing\Missing.exe
Have you any idea what this director thing is? On XP when the program starts, it starts with a video - this is obviously what is not appearing. The instructions that came with the game tell you to install Shockwave and Quicktime. I have done this both from the CD supplied and have also tried the newest versions of each from the web but still the same messages.

Hi Mark,
Followed the link but it just goes to the patch which sorts out the connection to the new web server. I am at a loss as to what it can be.
Dom
What do you mean by cam is not working?
Done, that - guess what - still no difference. The version of quicktime on the CD won't install at all on Vista so have had to get the latest from Apple. Shockwave did install but has made no difference.
I have read on another website that a university has the same error listed as a problem on their bespoke software. The solution they give their students is to download a new exe file they have created to get around the rpoblem. Maybe thats whats needed from the Adventure Company?
