I have a GR-AX30U camcorder manufactured in 1994 that is showing a symbol like a rectangle with another smaller rectangle on top of it with a slash through it which I would guess means something isn't right. It seems to be recording properly but I was just curious as to what that symbol is trying to alert me to. Thanks

Without actually seeing the indicator the only rectangular symbol I can think of is the batter level. Any chance you can take a picture of it and reply to this post with the picture?

SOURCE: camcorder says lens cap is on when its not

No Prob...I had the same problem with my GR-D72U. There is a defect in the CCD image sensor. JVC will fix it for FREE! All it will cost you is shipping it to them. Go to http://www.jvcservice.com/service/CustNoticeCamcorder.asp?PgReq=DspDtaDtl&MdlNbr=GR-D72US&Pgm=CCD , download the rapair request... Send it off to your nearest service center and they ship it back all fixed up in less than a week. I must tell you though, you ONLY have until Dec. 31 2008 to do this. Not only did they fix mine, they cleaned the heads but also buffed out a scratch. After you get yours fixed, post as many helps as you can to others.

SOURCE: E04 Error

Eject tape leaving cover open and remove battery. Re-insert battery and re-insert tape also leaving cover open. Keep repeating this process until eo4 message disappears. This worked for my GR-DVL100e after about four repeats. After getting your camcorder operational, they say it is good practice not to leave tape in camcorder when not in use.

The slash key under the ? shows up as a e with an accent why?

To the right of the "space-bar" on the keyboard, hold down the ALT GR ("alternate graphic") key, press the "slash" key, and release the ALT GR key.

Or, in "Regional Settings" within "Control Panel", change your "input method" to "US-English" keyboard, rather than some French or French-Canadian input method.

Black screen on camcorder

I think you have two different issues here. The black screen may be due to a CCD failure. Canon has a worldwide service notice regarding this issue, and will repair your unit at no cost if they determine this is the problem (it sounds like it is).

The little red symbol indicates your backup battery (or date/time battery) CR1616 needs to be replaced. It is located behind a small square panel which you can see to the left of the menu buttons when you open the LCD panel.
