Sony kdf-46e3000 turns on stays on for a few minutes shuts off green power light flashes then goes to red flashing lamp light hit the power button again process starts all over. Picture looks great for the few minutes that it's on. Is it the lamp or do I have another problem?

It is the lamp that is reached at end of life span. Replace lamp in tv if it has not been replaced in last 2-3 years. Lamp replacement procedure is easy and written in user manual.

Try cleaning both fans and inspect the lamp. Usually quite obvious if the lamp is bad (ie. blown tube/shattered glass) Make sure you secure the lamp door properly after.
The reason this happens the most is because of the lamp being weak. I have not seen anything else cause this problem. You can varify this by turning the set off and wait until it shuts down totally.
with the Sony remote, press the display button, the #5 button,
volume down button, then power button. This puts you into the the factory error code mode. If you see the lamp code with multiple errors and no other errors shown, the lamp is the problem.
Most of Sonys lamps have a aprox life of 3000 hrs. Some last longer and some shorter.

Lamp of TV getting weaker and requires replacement. This shut off by itself will increase day by day until you put new lamp in TV.
Always Buy Sony original lamp and avoid aftermarket/ cheap lamp for TV safety.
How many times Red Lamp flashes, its important as it shows problem and its location in tv. Below is detail of lamp blinks and you may know the problem area in tv by counting lamp flashes.
