I have an older machine: model MFC 9700. It has stopped receiving faxes and is showing an error message 71. Says to unplug and call Brother. Is this worth repairing? or smarter to invest in new machine? Thanks!

Error 71 showing on the screen

This error means that there is a scanner motor error. Try and remove the error by following these steps: Press MENU *,2,8,6,4. The machine beeps for approximately 1 second and will display "MAINTENANCE" on the screen, indicating that it is placed in the initial stage of the maintenance mode, a mode in which the machine is ready to accept entry from the keys. Now you are inside the simulation, Press 01 to reset the error status. After that press 99 to exit the simulation.

- Pressing the 9 key twice in the initial stage of the maintenance mode makes the machine exit from the maintenance mode, restoring it to the standby state.
- Pressing the Stop button after entering only one digit restores the machine to the initial stage of the maintenance mode.

If the error comes back call Brother support, here are the contact details:

Brother MFC-9700 Machine Error 71

71 says the fuser unit is not installed, it means the fuser lamp is burned out, or the temp. sensors are bad. In either case the best repair is a new fuser which you'll find at www.precisionroller.com

Error code 71

That is a laser alignment issue...
You might get lucky:

1. unplug printer power cord from wall or powerstrip.
2. Turn ON printer (without the powercord plugged in).
3. Plug in powercord and turn ON printer again.

If error code 71 remains .... repeat above steps.... but I would advise replacing ($180 ~ $240) instead of repairing ($150)...

Hope this helps!
