Hi, my problem is with my GE advantium speedcook microwave oven. When using 'speedcook' feature, the oven starts, then there is sparking inside the circuit board area, followed by a loud POP, and this trips the breaker. It is on a dedicated double 20 amp circuit. The microwave features work. I have replaced the internal 20 amp fuse when that blew 2 years ago. I installed it with a new fuse holder, because the old one melted. This time, I can reset the breaker and the microwave gives the message to reset the clock. I am very handy- so don't tell me to call a service tech. They often know less than they should. No offense. -Nick

  • Select the "Options" menu and adjust the clock display settings if the display is blank. Set the clock if the oven won't start. The clock must be set for the oven to work properly, as oven programming is dependent on the clock.
  • Close the door tightly if the oven won't start. The oven won't start if the door isn't closed. You can identify from the lights whether the oven failing to start is related to the door or to the power supply. If the control panel is illuminated and interior lights are on when you open the oven door, you can be sure the oven is receiving power and any starting problems are due to the door not being closed tightly.
  • Press and hold the "Clear/Off" button if the oven performs strangely. Be sure to hold it for a few seconds. This will reset the GE Advantium.
But as you mentioned that there is /was a loud noise this is a indication of the unit make any usual noise (groaning, gurgling, etc.?) or was / is it either louder or quieter than normal? It may be as simple as the top door switch or its mount or it may be a bad magnetron or shorted diode.

This did not help. I did not need help resetting the clock, or closing the door. I have a manual. You said it may be a bad magnetron or shorted diode. Expand on why you came to this diagnosis and on locating, checking, and replacing these elements. Include diagrams and parts sources if possible.

    tip

Great advice!!! took me about 40 minutes on my advantium speedcook microwave...

The folks at GE told me you need a technician to change this bulb. Phooey, I say. It was a piece of cake. Save $ 100 and follow my instructions. I did it. I would imagine most GE microwaves would be similar.

Here's how to do it. I bought this bulb (part # WB36X951) from PARTSTORE.COM for $ 18.58 total (that's bad enough). Got the bulb within a few days.

This model GE microwave, is a stainless model with stainless inside and grilling element.

The bulb is located directly behind the front control panel (on the right), but you need to remove the stainless cover to get to it. Naturally, unplug it first. You'll need one those star bits (not sure what size), a philips head won't work. There's four of those sneaky screws on the rear. Remove those screws and the cover slides off. VOILA! It's magic! The bulb, you'll see, is sealed to a base, but it has as double slide contact. Undo this before removing the bulb. It's snapped into a little fixture. Remove the old bulb and snap new one in. Replace the contact leads and that's it.

The cover is a little tricky to get back seated properly. Along with the sneaky star screws, this is another attempt to discourage consumer servicing. Make sure that the cover is flush with the back before replacing the screws. You're done.

I for one, am tired of this type of this type of rip-off and scamming. I hope this tips helps many and saves some of you from paying a ridiculous service fee.

How to change nightlight bulb on ge advantium 120 oven

Advantium - Interior Light Operation While Microwaving

The Advantium 240 oven interior (cavity) light will illuminate anytime the door is open. However, due to the dark tint on the oven door, there is not a light on while cooking since the food would not be visible using the interior lamp.
Food may be viewed during a microwave cycle by pressing the Microwave/Oven Light pad.

One of the Upper Level Speedcook lamps will come on for 5 seconds. The Microwave/Oven Light pad can be pressed up to 5 times during a microwave cooking cycle. The limit of 5 times is to prevent excessive heat on microwave cookware from the Speedcook lamp.

The Advantium 120 oven cavity is illuminated anytime the door is opened and while the unit is in the microwave only mode. As a result it will not have the Microwave/Oven Light pad.

    GE Advantium won't heat

Actually, these have a 10-year warranty on the magnetron and on the halogen speedcook lamps.

GE will even send you the magnetron to replace it yourself. Call them at 888-239-6832.

The full service manual with installation instructions is here.

Part ordering help (if you need other parts) is here.

I'd recommend that your bookmark this link to your favorites.

If you or someone you know want to replace the magnetron yourself, you will need to remove the oven from the wall.

If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward. Thewy are in the service manual.

You can also download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions
    here.

If you prefer to replace it though, I would suggest doing Google searches to try to find 240V microwave ovens. They're the exception.
