My laptop does not see my D40 when I plug it in to the USB port?

  • kakima Aug 12, 2010

Have you considered NOT connecting the camera to the computer?

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive. Or you can use any photo cataloging program, such as Nikon Transfer.

I want to use the external usb port cant figure out how

If you are plugging into a laptop USB port you may need an external power supply for the external port. Laptop USB ports have a lower power rating than desktops, to conserve battery power. Generally all you should need to do is plug in the USB device and the operating system should find the required drivers.

Camera wont turn on My Nikon D40x wont turn on at all, i have been using it, then plugged it in the my laptop with the USB cable, unplugged it to take more pix, and it now wont turn on at all!!

Just a suggestion ... remove the lens, card and battery. Recharge the battery completely. Install the lens, card and battery then do a hard reset...

Hard Reset:
With D40 you need to install the lens, the card and the battery then open the cover under which USB and video sockets are. There is a small button in the hole. Press it with pencil tip or something and the camera will be reset losing all settings and clock time.
