High speed does not work but low speed does. Is there an easy fix, or will this require a motor replacement to get both speeds working again? The cooler is a Mastercool model MC64C

If your motor only works on low speed and not on high speed first check to see if you have the proper voltage to high speed. Check with a voltmeter or multimeter, check from common on the motor to high speed on the motor at the switch. If you have the proper voltage then you have an open winding on high speed and the motor needs replaced. If you don’t have the proper voltage or any volts, then the switch is bad and needs replaced. This also will be the same if, medium speed won’t work and low speed does.

Motor does not go from low speed to high speed If the motor is set to low speed it does not turn on until the high speed range is hit then it tries to go from stop to high speed and throws thw belt

Ive got a mildewy smell coming from my evaporative cooler how do i get rid of it?

This unit needs to be serviced. Try replacing the pads with the sponge like pads.Drain the old water and clean up the pan and pump area. Go down to a pool supply store and buy some chlorine tablets and add to the water. In fact, they make these tablets just for the evaporator units. There are 3 states to water, solid, liquid and gas,
. This will get rid of the smell.

The unit was working fine, but now only the low speed works. The high speed does not work at all on vent or on cool

I have found that it is usually a failure in the switch. Either the switch has burned out or the wire has become disconnected from the switch. Operating on high speed draws more power thus heating the contact in the switch or the spring terminal (terminal clip) connector. Most of these switches are now made of plastic. Check your switch for signs of over heating and also check the integrity of the connectors. Make certain it is unplugged first to avoid electrocution or have a technician look at it.

Water pump size and over saturated pads

Louis, The cooling does not come from the volume of water running over the pads. It cools by cooling the air passing through the wet pads. So, Yours is an impeccably logical argument that leads to a false conclusion. Bigger is not better in this caThe fishy smell is from the matting (pads) when kept saturated, Molds and algae will form if there is too much water also.. Best you get the original size pump Good luck and stay cool - Ned

New Mastercool pads smell bad

The cellulose pads in a mastercool are glued together and usually the adhesive is what you smell. It may take a while for it to go away. Strange as it may seem, as the pads get more mineralization and you use it more the smell will go away. Do not use a cooler for your whole house without plenty of exhaust through a window or an updux. Coolers work best when there is plenty of freely moving air.
