Laptop shuts down during Windows XP install

When the CPU overheats then it will shut down (i.e. thermal overload) and won't boot up again until it has cooled down. If this is the problem is not fixed then the CPU will eventually fail.
A faulty fan causes the problem or the fan and heat sink assembly are clogged with dust.
Check the CPU fan to see if it spins freely, if not replace the fan.
If the fan and heat sink is clogged with dust the remove the dust and make sure the vents are clear and dust free. Use a small brush and can of compressed air to do this.

When i am going to format, laptop is shut down during format

Hi there.
Remove the battery and try to format the HDD on AC power only, if it still shuts down get a tin of compressed air and give short blasts through the air vents and the CPU fan which will be located on the underside of the laptop, this will remove any dust or foreign objects from the machine which could be causing it to shut down prematurely.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!

Toshiba Satellite: A135-S4427 / Won't shut down

Hi,
by pressing the power button in, the computer has gone into standby or hibernate mode.
Heres what you Do:- press and hold the power button for between 10 to 20 seconds.
that should bring it out of hibernation.
if that does,nt work. remove the main battery.
when you,ve resolved the problem, run a disk-scan via your windows operating system.

Shuts down for no reason

With the battery removed any interruption of the AC power will cause the laptop to cut off. The power adaptor may be faulty or intermittent or more likely the socket on the laptop motherboard may have a dry jointed connection. These problems would not be apparent with a charged battery fitted.
Otherwise [especially with P4 type processors] overheating could cause cutting out - clean any fans and make sure vents for air intake are not blocked [by bedding etc].

Laptop crashes shortly after boot, power light rapidly blinks red.

Its late, so just to make sure I'm not brain-dead basically your laptop runs fine as long as its powered by the AC adaptor but dies fairly quickly while running via battery. This is very typical of a battery that will no longer hold a charge, not normally a user repairable item. It could also be that the charging electronics (in the laptop) isn't charging the battery, again not a typical user repair job. About your only option short of taking it to the repair shop is buying or borrowing a battery as a test.
