Unable to access files on the flash drive

I have a new laptop. When I put the SDHC in the drive, the drive doesn't respond or read the memory card. I also put it in my USB card reader, and it didn't recognize then either. Can you help me? I have a Palm Treo 700W that I use and the SanDisk 512mb SD card works fine. However I just bought a PNY Optima SD HC 4gb card that my phone does not recognize. Have photos on a 1gig PNY card The card has stopped working & a message on the rear viewer of the camera reads "card cannot be used may be damaged "

When putting the card into the computer slot the computer wont reconise the card at all

Same situation with the 2gb card purchased to use in my NIkon D40. Has worked just fine until yesterday. Right in the middle of taking some pictures it just all of a sudden went blank and read "This memory card cannot be used. Card may be damaged. Insert another card." Tried to read card from several pc's and got nothing. I desperately need help in retrieving those pictures, let alone get this card to work again after 6 months of minimal use!!
