There are two
possible ways to remove the error from your printer. First is to actually clean
the absorber pads that are full of waste ink. The second is to reset the
printer to clear the error and let the printer print again.
Clean the two absorber pads. Its
is actually two absorber pads located on the right side of the printer, under
the ink cartridges when it is in home base position.
How to access the
pads and remove it for cleaning?
Turn on the printer. Lift the top cover to
expose the ink cartridges. As soon as you lift up the cover the cartridge
carrier will move away from its home base.. Then the pads will be exposed. It
will be a dirty job so be prepared with your tweezer and extra cloth for some
ink spill. Using the tweezer, lift up the pads sitting on a rubber retainer.
The pads can be easily clean by placing it under a running water. Warm water
will be nice to remove the ink from the pads. After this, you can now return
the pads. However, the problem will not be solve especially if you are
currently facing the waste ink absorber full error or E-27.
Use a reset procedure to clear the error in your
printer
and start printing again

Firstly, it might be important to note that the waste ink absorber is a little pad that sits under the cartridge's "home" position and collects any loose ink that may be on the cartridge. This prevents smudges, so it's a good thing to have. Many ink jet printers have them, but as far as I know, only Canon PIXMA printers display an error when a certain internal counter suggests that the ink absorber may be full. If you've done a lot of printing, the ink absorber may actually be full and you might need to have it cleaned or replaced to ensure the best printing quality. However, if you haven't printed that much or you have and you just need to print something right this minute, there is a way to reset the counter and stop the error from showing up again. Until the counter reaches a certain unknown point, that is, in which case you'll have to repeat the procedure.

I had several different problems with paper jamming, half a page printed only and 'System Error 5100' displayed on my PC. I tried resetting procedure shown above with no improvement. My next step was to change the cartidges which were only half empty, and after changing just the black Cannon cartridge the printer worked correctly

Reporting solution by daweed:
"WASTE TANK ALMOST FULL or FULL ERROR MESSAGE PROBLEM
This is true
with many Canon Ink Jet Printers: Eventually, you'll get an error
message "Waste Ink Tank Almost Full, Contact Your Canon Repair Center".
Canon is totally sly about this, and is actually a pretty ridiculous
design flaw that they should be ashamed of- planned obsolescence.
Anyway, don't let this problem discourage buying an otherwise fantastic
Canon printer.
This problem will also be indicated by flashing orange lights on your printer. Different flashes for different models.
LOOK
IN YOUR PRINTER MANUAL TO KNOW WHAT NUMBER OF FLASHES INDICATE. In any
case, your computer printer software will also tell you exactly what is
going on.
You need to do this after you get the WASTE TANK ALMOST
FULL message and the printer continues to work, but BEFORE the WASTE
TANK FULL message and the printer completely stops. I think. ;-)
Here's the fix:
The
waste ink take is actually just a felt pad that sits under the printer
mechanism inside the case and absorbs the ink from your cleanings. From
what I gather, its both a time consuming and expensive proposition to
take to Canon to fix. And they won't tell people how to do it
themselves. Well, I WILL. And this works.
Remember of course, you've got to cycle the cleaning process a huge amount of times to get this to occur.
But
when it does, there is a fix-it-yourself solution that is both safe and
effective for the printer, and free. You have to be slightly mechanical
to do this. If you get this message and you've never used a screwdriver
and are all thumbs, well, Canon gotcha. But give it a shot even then,
or give it to someone halfway coordinated to do this for you.
You may RESET the printer code first if you like or do it after you clean the pad
In
some cases you may need to REMOVE THE PRINT HEAD FIRST or the reset
code will not work. This was true of the S900 and i960 so, remove the
print head first before doing this reset.
This is the correct code for the S and I (like i960) series of printers. (M series below this)
1) Power off printer
2) Hold RESUME button then press and hold POWER. (The beeper MAY sound once, or may not depending on your model.)
3) Hold POWER and Release RESUME.
4) Press RESUME twice then release both POWER and RESUME buttons.
5) When the indicator lights steady, press RESUME 4 times (for the S900, 3 times for the 8200 apparently).
6) Press power to set data.
7) Print away!
For
other codes for other printers and more info go here to this big forum
(but try the above first) Fix Your Own Printer Generally many of
Canon's models use exactly this same code, the i models use the same
code, all the s models use the same code.
I did this and it works fine! No more error messages and so..."

I have the same problem, but Jet Tec waste inks. When I first replaced black (pgi 5bk)-don't forget to place the small chip from the original cartridge to replacement; it worked fine. But now, it has a lot of problems because this **** printer from canon only want original inks (and the original are tooooooooo expensive). I'll never bought anything else from canon.

Eight flashes: Waste ink absorber almost full
The printer has a built-in waste ink absorber for the ink used during Print Head cleaning. Eight flashes indicates that the waste ink absorber is nearly full. Press the RESUME/CANCEL button to cancel the error so you can continue printing. Before the waste ink absorber becomes completely full, contact a Canon service representative.
Important
Canon recommends that you call for service as soon as this error occurs. Once the waste ink absorber becomes completely full, printing will no longer be possible

I can"t get the ink cartridges (canon mp210) to stay to the left (position they would be in to change the cartridges) so I can access the absorber pads. Help!
