Question about Electronics - Others

1 Answer

I have a Xantrex 3000 Watt inverter on my boat, largely to run my 120-volt fridge. The installer told me to never, ever have my shore power hooked up, and especially not to turn on the AC circuitbreaker for the fridge, when my fridge was at the same time plugged into the inverter. We've had the system 5 boating seasons, and never did this, but this afternoon I did. I got the fault light and beeping and an "EO5" message on the status display screen. When I unplugged the shore power, turned off the fridge circuitbreaker, and turned the inverter back on, it went to 13.2V and stayed there for 20 seconds, but then there was a ticking sound in the inverter, the fault light came on, the beeping started again, and I once again got the "EO5" message. I believe electricity from the shore power got into the inverter and cooked something. If so, can the unit be repaired, and where can I take or send it for those purposes? I live in Kingston, Ontario.

Most likely reason for 'ticking' sound is one or more FET(field effect transistor) have shorted . Any electronics shop can fix ,but, repair may approach cost of replacing . The parts themselves are not expensive but labour may be high .
Consider getting an inverter designed for solar installs with proper automatic 'shore power' switching and never worry again .

This internal fault code can mean so many things, but basically it more than likely has some internal parts that the smoke is no longer inside. They can be repaired however, email [email protected] to discuss further.
Thanks, Bob

Inverter problems

3K is a big inverter. Depending on mfr, though, inverters put out numbers for PEAK, not AVERAGE Watts, and have trouble supplying large amounts of surge current on demand. Some appliances with large motors present large turn-on demand, like A/C's, washers, ovens, and fridges and will give converters trouble.
Your Microwave, if it's a big one, like a 1.2 or 1.3KW will ask for a lot of juice when it first turns on. But once it's on for a few seconds will probably be OK.
Get a bigger or different inverter, or a smaller microwave.

Loosing power

You need to add up all of the loads connected to the inverter. A 120watt load at 120 volts equals a load of 10 amps at 12 volts.
Watts= VoltsXAmps.
Add to that any other load on the battery - radio, lights, etc. and the standard vehicle battery will be dead in a short time. You need to either have a bank of large batteries, such as two or three group 27 batteries in parallel, or you need to keep the van running so the alternator can keep the battery charged.

Trace, no power from line one from either gen set or shore power. Have rebooted, and when I invert the coach works normal. Charge system to house and coach batts perfec

If a normal install, the shore power and generator will go through a transfer switch then to the inverter. If when inverting 120 VAC circuits are OK, then the problem must be before the inverter. I would suspect that it is the transfer switch.

Disconnect shore power, make sure generator in NOT running then take a look at the transfer switch these are in a boat or RV but either can lead to vibration problems which can lead to loosening wire connections which can lead to heating and burning. It may be something as simple as a wire coming loose. (Which could be dangerous!)
Whether or not the contacts in the relays are OK, check and/or tighten all electrical connections. It's a good idea to check and tighten all electrical connections regularly.

Some transfer switches can be repaired by replacing just the relays. Other units (like mine this year!) will need to be replaced entirely.

I have a customer that recently replaced his generator, problem is , he got a 120 VAC output. He has 2 SW 4024 for 240 VAC output. Can I hookup the 120VAC to the master inverter, or should I get a...

Hello,

I will accept the second option which is getting transformer.

Go ahead and get a transformer in order to step up the voltage. This is better than hooking up the 120V AC to the master inverter.

In summary, get a transformer to step up the voltage.

I hope this is clear now....

Good luck.

Fis\rst of all is the inverter supplying 120 VAC? when turned on?. If so the inverter seems to be working.I think your problem is in the truck alternator/charging system. The inverter is independent of this charger..
