The power source will start only if the output current is between some limits. Because your tv is an old one the capacitors in it have started to dry up = the current that passes thru them increases. If you keep hitting the power button on and off you are subjecting the source and its capacitors to power shocks = the capacitors heat up = their internal resistance grows = the current that flows thru them lower to a relatively normal value = the power source becomes operational = the tv starts.
In the end the capacitor will fail and fry the entire tv. Replace them all ASAP. Soldering skills are mandatory, if you don;t have them , call a pro.
How many times does the light on the front blink when it doesn't turn on? This will give you the diagnostic trouble code so that you can narrow down the exact problem. once I have that information I can assist you further.
