I have the same player with a similar problem, though the cable is not broken on mine as far as I can tell.
When I put in a disc and close the lid, I can hear the disc spin and the drive seek, but after about 30 seconds, it always shows "NO DISC" in the upper-left area of the screen. I used to use it daily to listen to MP3 audio books on my 45-minute-long drive to and from work every day and I'd occasionally watch DVDs at lunch, but now it does not read any type of disc at all.
After I did a Google search, it seems that Mintek's products are pretty crappy overall and the worst part is that Mintek now appears to be out of business. Their web site,
www.mintekdigital.com is now completely gone and there is no current contact information.
It's too bad because I really did like the player's capabilities and relatively long battery life. It came with a remote, a wall charger, a car charger, (cheap) headphones, and a video out to composite video cable. Before I used it on my drive, my son used it in his room because we didn't have a second DVD player and it worked great for him then too.
