Hi,

Jeena you can just connect the hard drive to the mac it will recognize it & it will install the drivers automatically.

Before using it you have to format the drive using the Apple's disk utility.

First, locate the 10.2 CD and start up the iMac using the CD (insert CD, restart computer, immediately hold down C key).
Do not click on the installer screen. Instead go to the Installer Menu (or Options) and select Disk Utility.

When that opens, click on the second icon at the top left, then click on Repair Disk. Watch the activity screen. If it does any repairs, you will need to click on the Repair Disk button a second time. This is to make sure it finds all the problems and repairs them. You want to see no reference to repairs made - which may mean you have to click on that button three or four times.

How much memory is installed on the computer? To find this, just go to the Apple menu at the top far left and select About This Mac. The window that opens will give you the amount of memory installed, processor speed and exactly what OS version you are running.

How much empty available space is on the hard drive? To find this, just open a window. At the very bottom you should see how many items and how much available space.

You can use the SMART to run the diag on your had drive from

http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/system_disk_utilities/smartutility.html

The additional tasks which can be performed by using disk tility can be found :

This will solve your problem.

Good Luck.

How to initialize disk

Do you want to initialize the hard drive on your Mac? Or an External Hard Drive?

Assuming External Hard Drive:
  1. Go To Applications.
  2. Open Utilities Folder.
  3. Open Disk Utility (You Should Already Have External Drive Attached To Computer).
  4. On left panel select the top name of the external hard drive.
  5. On the upper tabs on the right side of the panel select Erase.
  6. ***Note this will delete any content on the external hard drive
  7. Under Format - Choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
  8. In Box Below Name The External Hard Drive whatever name you want it to be.
  9. On bottom right select erase.
The External Drive will be Mac Compatible.

Hi, I use this HD for all of my photos and that is it nothing more. Last week I used my external, all was well. Last night I tried to upload photos from my wedding over the weekend to my Mac and the...

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

I just bought a mac book pro 13.i would like to know how can i create a recovery disk for my laptop

Can i ask why you need to make one?
Its best to clean your drive first, then you have to make 2 disk images, mounted on your desktop.

Mac not recognizing External Western Digital HD.

the problem is that your western digital operates using the NTFS (New Technology File System) which is the standard file system of Windows. Apple macs is not interopable with native NTFS therefore you need to install a read-write NTFS file-system driver on your mac.

an excellent free mac NTFS driver can be found here-
http://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/NTFS-3G.shtml

download and install the software then restart your mac.
