A lot of flat screens have pretty over-reactive 'normalising' controls. I have a Wharfedale flat-screen which 'compresses' any extra sound to the point where it's impossible to understand speech.
Start by hitting 'Menu' on the tv - then select 'Sound' - then lookout for AVL (Auto Volume Level) or 'Normalise'. DESELECT the AVL.
O.K. - so it's going to sound louder for explosions and quieter for whispers - but that's what real life is really like !
You may have similar settings hidden away on your other devices - do the same with them. The cumulative effect of a string of devices (all with AVL on) leads to auto audio mayhem.
