I have a Compaq N1020v with a 14.1 display. The LCD was cracked and I plan to replace it. I would like to replace it with the 15 inch display for the Compaq N1020v. Will that work, or is the 15.0 to big?

Responsibly recycle that "dead" computer, and buy a new computer with Windows 8.

It will cost $20 to $40 to purchase a "pre-owned" 15-inch LCD monitor.

If will cost $50 to $100 to buy a new 17-inch LCD monitor.

Your money; your choice.

It is broken. Replace it.

If you look online for a "previously-owned" 15-inch LCD monitor, expect to pay $20 to $30.

If you go to any "big-box" electronics store, you can buy a 19-inch LCD monitor for under $100.

Either way, it's much less expensive to REPLACE it
than it would be for a professional TV/video technician to try to trouble-shoot and REPAIR it.

It can be inverter boad, so try to find someone who have got the same type of model so try to change the inveter the see what will happen.Or try to check the cable if its well connected on the motherboad of the computer.

there are service manuals google search for compaw evo service manual, or hardware maintenance manual the lcd covers do need to be pryed off gently, you get the lcd frame odff by bending the frame upwards, towards yourself, every few inches. the bottom has 2 or 3 srews to remove first, and sometimes a wireless antenna on the front (top) of the lcd has 2 screws inside as well)
