Connect the Maxtor to a different computer, to see if the device works in some other computer.

If the warranty is still valid, exercise the warranty to get a replacement.

If the warranty has expired, disassemble the casing, and disconnect the USB-to-disk-drive interface from the disk-drive.

Connect the disk-drive as a "slave" disk-drive in some other computer, to see if the USB-to-disk-drive interface is the part that failed.

If all else fails, search online for commercial "data recovery services" -- for a large amount of money, they will disassemble the disk-drive, repair it, just long-enough to copy your files.

My Hitachi Simpledrive Mini 250 suddenly quit....when I lookein the device manager it said Code 10, would not start????

Sounds like a disk error and it cant read the start of the drive. If it still detects it you might be able to repair it with a partition recovery or partition repair tool available online.

MyBook WD external HDD Code 10 error

If you have tried the device in 5 different computers and it has the same problem the the problem is with the device. You might want to try and dis-assemble the hard drive case and try installing it directly into the computer to make sure the drive is working properly and to recover you files. If the drive is working then the problem is with the device interface that is built into the case or the built-in power supply.

Laptop Won't Recognize External HD

You can try opening the device manager in Window XP and uninstall the external hard disk (make sure you show unplugged devices).
Then replug the drive again, and it should reinstall the drivers.

My Maxtor 3200 ext. drive which I had for one year now (no pbs.) not being recognized by my system and I see a Code 10 error in the Device Manager.

first you can use your troubleshooter in your device manager to find out what that code 10 error is or you can go to the maxtor website in the support or troubleshoot section and tell them your code 10 error,it might be a driver needs to be updated.

The IDE controller on the drive pcb or the enclosure has failed. Switching the enclosure should do it.
