Remove the battery and charger/ac adapter/power cord from your Compaq Presario F700 laptop, press and hold the power button for 20 seconds to discharge any residual current inside the Compaq Presario F700 . This clears your RAM and is like a hardware reset. Replace the battery and charger/ac adapter/power cord and turn your Compaq Presario F700 laptop on.

Boot in "safe mode". As it starts up press F8, the computer ask you if you'd like to start in safe mode. Highlight "safe mode" and press enter. See if your laptop is booting up ok .

If your Compaq Presario F700 boots ok, do the following,

Try System Restore first,
Start Menu->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore. Choose the most recent date before you the encountered problem. If it doesn't work, try the next date.

If System Restore does not fix it, as a last resort, you might need to fdisk, reformat your laptop hard disk clean and reinstall OS, that usually fixes all bugs. Before going that route, try following,

Uninstall unnecessary programs and applications.

If the problem persists, did you check if it could be your Compaq Presario F700 laptop power cord or power source problem? Defective or insufficient power supply might cause error messages that are misleading. Take the battery out and power on your laptop with the charger only. Make sure your Compaq Presario F700 power jack and charger plug tip are securely connected. Did you notice the power jack loose? You can find laptop power jack on ebay. Fixing and soldering the power jack requires professional skill though. The charger green/blue LED should be on. If not, replace the defective charger. remove the battery then try to plug the charger directly on your laptop without a battery.. to test if the battery is working properly. if not.. maybe your main board have a problem. just like athe compaq presario of my friend. also mainboard problem.

remove all power from hte computer and the bios battery for about 10 min then put it back together this should reset it back to factory.

Try disconnecting the main power supply connector to the motherboard, carefully, and then plug it back in. Then try and turn the computer on again.

Rechargeable batteries unfortunately dont last forever you will find the life of yours is over. They can be picked up quite cheap on ebay new from china. cheers and plz vote

I can't solve your problem, but can tell you what I did to my F761us which has same problem as you are, it happened 3 weeks ago(08/2010) after we bought it-- 2 years 4 months the shortest life we ever have over 30 years computer experiences.

I am pretty sure my HD, battery, RAM, fan... are all OK
--the fan is working (you can feel it from vent)
I could see my battery light is on whenever I took it out for a while then put back, and after a whille the light off (should be fully charged).
we bought expansion RAM card, so we have 3, I did test all of them in each ram slot.
I also switch my power suply between HP L2000 and the broken one. I notice the broken one didn't warm up the power adpter-quite cold. but the same power supply plug into L2000 it warmed up as normal. does it mean something ?

we spent around $10 to convert internal HD to external usb HD
and could be accessed by our another HP DV7. (unfortunately we formatted it as C : D: 2 partitions, that L2000 can't accept 2 partitions.)

indeed the touchpad comparing my oldest still working HP L2000 (over 6 years), my F700 was very hot before it broken.

I did diassemblle it and found one shorty hair in FAN, and very very minor dust.

Yep, the power supply input to the laptop is gone - the external input shorted out. You may find that the Compaq repair charges almost equal a new one.

your battery may have memory OR it is on the battery recall list because it is defective try the manufacturer's site and see if the battery is being recalled

Less than one year old? Then, it can be fixed at NO COST to you, via "warranty" from the vendor.
