I have a Lacie rugged, which I use with a Mac OS X. I've got my hole itunes library on it. But yesterday when I connected it to my computer, the computer recognized it but i couldn't save projects on it or anything like that. I couldn't even open my itunes. It just says "The program itunes could not be opened. There was an unknown error (13014)". And if i try to save my files on the external harddrive it says that the file couldn't be saved because of an unknown error. Help me! I Don't want to loose my itunes library..
Re: I have a Lacie rugged, which I use with a Mac OS X....
This error happens when the location to where the library is stored is inaccessible. I'm afraid your hard disk has died and everything you had on it is lost.
Last hope attempt: take the hard disk out of its case and put it directly in your Mac. If the disk is still alive it will show up when you boot - use what little life it still has to copy all your files from it then junk it.

Yes - If the unit is USB it will work with any computer that has a USB port - if hooked up to any Mac though it normally will be formatted for use only with other Mac's. You can usually specify what type of filesystem you want to use when you have it hooked up.
When you need to restore your backed up iTunes Library from your external hard drive to your computer, follow these steps:
Quit iTunes. Locate your external hard drive. Mac: On the Desktop or Finder sidebar. Windows: In My Computer
Drag the iTunes folder (backed up earlier) from your external hard drive to whatever location you desire on your internal hard drive. It is recommended that you choose the default location for the iTunes folder, which is:
Mac OS X: /Users/username/Music Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\ Windows Vista or Windows 7: \Users\username\My Music\ Open iTunes while holding down the Option key (Mac) or Shift key (Windows).
In the resulting dialog, click the Choose Library button.
Select the iTunes folder you just moved to the internal hard drive. Click Choose.
Method One If you share your computer with other people, you can maintain separate user accounts for each person who uses the computer. This is useful especially if each user has different tastes in music; users can maintain separate, personalized iTunes music libraries and can customize their iPods accordingly.
Mac OS X users: Learn how to set up additional user accounts.
Windows users: Look in your computer's Help documentation to learn how to set up additional user accounts. To locate this information:
Click the Start Menu, and then click Help or Help and Support. Enter "new user" in the Search field. Press Return. If you create multiple user accounts on one computer but want the same music to be available in iTunes for all users, see iTunes: How to share music between different accounts on a single computer.
Method Two
You may use multiple iPods on a computer without the need to create multiple user accounts. To do this, you can set iTunes to update each iPod with only certain playlists. This method allows you to put all your music on, say, your iPod and keep your iPod shuffle updated with only your workout music. Here's how to do this with iTunes 9:
Create new iTunes playlists that contain all the music that you want to sync to each iPod. Learn how to Sync your iPod (read the iPod Tutorial Steps section below the video). Note: iTunes for Windows does not support syncing multiple iPod devices at the same time.
Method Three
Create a separate iTunes library for each iPod. Note: It is important that you make a new iTunes Library file. Do not just make a copy of your existing iTunes Library file. If iTunes is open, quit it.
Mac users: Hold down the Option key while you open iTunes. Windows users: Hold down the Shift key while you open iTunes. In the dialog that appears, click Create Library. Name and save the alternate library file. iTunes opens with your brand new library file. Open iTunes Preferences. Choose iTunes > Preferences (Mac) or Edit > Preferences (Windows). Click the Advanced tab. Deselect the "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" checkbox if it is already selected and click OK. This will prevent iTunes from creating duplicates of your existing media files in the new library folder.
Add the specific media files you want on your iPod to iTunes either by dragging them into iTunes or choosing File > Add to Library (Mac) or File > Add File to Library or Add Folder to Library (Windows).
Once you have the iTunes Library just how you want it, connect and sync your iPod.
Once the sync is complete, quit iTunes. Mac users: Hold down the Option key while you open iTunes. Windows users: Hold down the Shift key while you open iTunes. Click Choose library. Choose your original iTunes Library and click Choose (Mac Users) or Open (Windows Users). You can now switch back and forth between the different libraries for different iPods.
> it does NOT show on ... Macbook Pro running OS X 10.6.4
> it DOES mount up on older computers running older versions of OS X
> Lacie ... said there was no problem
So, the problem is "local" to ONE of your computers.
Be sure that your computer is connected to AC power, not running solely on its battery.
Try some other USB device in the USB port, to confirm that the USB port is working.
the problem is that your lacie drive operates using the NTFS (New Technology File System) under USB which is the standard file system of Windows. Apple mac is not interopable with native NTFS therefore you need to install a read-write NTFS file-system driver on your mac if you wish to use it via the USB connection.
an excellent free mac NTFS driver can be found here- http://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/NTFS-3G.shtml
download and install the software then restart your mac.
Thank you for asking your question with FixYa Support.
I am not sure what type of computer you have that your LaCie is connected to, but first and foremost, make sure the external hard drive has been properly formatted to work with the operating system your computer has. For Windows computers: the LaCie should be formatted in either FAT32 or NTFS (recommended- more secure). How to Format a HD in Windows Vista For Mac computers: the LaCie should be formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. How to format an external hard drive in Mac OS X
----------------------------------------------------------------------------- If your LaCie is already formatted, then the best way to import your entire iTunes library from the internal hard drive of your computer into the LaCie, especially if you are unable to drag and drop the library into you LaCie, is to try a simple copy and pasting of the ENTIRE iTunes folder from its home on your computer to the LaCie hard drive.
You can also use the website I like to reference which provides some good alternatives to effectively migrating your iTunes Library from a PC or Mac to your external hard drive:
For sake of space, I want you to review this article, because I not only agree with its content, it is exactly what I would explain to you as well in a more condensed, easy to follow fashion.
I hope I have helped guide you well on your question.
there is not enough power coming through ports each device re-quires 1-5 volts to run and if your mac has not got enough power to boot all devices then sadly all things pluged into will not reconise and with mac the os is not properly designed for it now if you got yourself an external usb 2.0 hub powered then yes all devices will be seen in mac windows firewire is unsafe at moment for this to happen ask them what system they had had configuration on.
hope this has helped
Maybe radical but this worked for me. My computer-select ipod,Right click and format disc (fat 32) Once refomatted plug in to computer and start Itunes. Click on Restore to factory settings, At the end of that you will need to plug it briefly into an ac outlet. Reconnect ti computer and start Itunes. Sync with library. This worked for me after trying everything else I could fine failed.
My error when I ran diagnostics said "one or more sync tests failed."
