You are better off just using standard triple A batteries and they do work..
(It said so in the instructions)..
If you go to the Sony web site they do cell the rechargeable batteries..
But that is why you may not be able to find the cartridge..
take a closer look at the cartridge you have.. it is a cartridge with two Sony rechargeable batteries and the Sony tag is actually a piece of tape that holds it together..
The rechargeable cells can be taken out of the cartridge. No you can't just use different rechargeable batteries but Sony sells these special cells individually.. BUT they cost FORTY bucks EACH!!! And you need two separate cells bringing the total cost around 80 bucks.. And then there is the cost to have it shipped to you!! WOW!!!
Maybe it is actually better off going out and buying external rechargeable batteries and a charger and you will end up paying less money!!
Why would Sony make a unit where the batteries cost more than the unit itself.. Well I guess you can figure that part out.. Because I sure the heck can't.. Humm.

Even though you can use regular AAA batteries (that you would have to replace often), there is a huge convenience factor with using the charging cradle that comes with the Sony headset. A solution I found was that I ordered some 550 mAh AAA batteries through Ebay (they came from England and cost me $8 total for four batteries). To make them work in the Sony headset you MUST use the bottom part of the plastic battery holder piece (all you need to do is peel off the BP-HP550-11 label and the bottom half of the plastic battery holder piece slips off of the Sony batteries). Then just slip in the new AAA batteries into the plastic battery holder bottom and then insert into the headset. The reason why you must use the bottom of the battery holder plastic piece is because the plastic piece pushes on a little switch. This switch activates the charging mechanism to enable the cradle charger to charge the batteries.
NOTE: I am not an electronics expert so I do not know if there would be any problem using other rechargeable AAA batteries (with higher mAh ratings). So I decided to be safe than sorry and ordered the 550 mAh batteries through Ebay.

Sony should be ashamed for making these so hard to find, but I just ordered mine from Batteryclerk.com for about $17. I know that specific product URLs tend to change rapidly, but the page I found it on was:http://www.batteryclerk.com/products/Rep...

If it's not there, I'd suggest you search for it on their site in case the URL changed.

I need rechargeaable battery for wireless sony stereo headphones mdr-rf860r

Since many Sony headsets use the BP-HP550-11 battery pack, I assume your battery pack is the same. If not, I assume whatever battery pack your headset came with, it is some type of plastic holder that holds two batteries together. I have Model MDR-RF970R and the battery is not holding a charge. Where can I get another battery? The # on the battery is BP-HP550-11/2.4v 550mAh. Thanks. Joe

Sony has some special case they put around the original 2 batteries to hold them together.

You don't need to buy special batteries. You can put regular AAA NiMH in.

To remove the compartment cover on the headsets make sure you hold down the pressure button on the left headphone to release the cover. Mine has the words "PUSH" on them.

With the cover removed you can then see the original BP-HP550 sony battery. Which you can remove and put 2 regular AAA batteries in.
