I was taking photos and evertime i took a photo i turned it off,(i was on a plane) and then went to turn it on again, and it opened then lens opener (two black things) and then beeps 2 times and turns...

Hi there please follow the steps and let me know the result.
1. Ensure batteries are fully charged & clean the battery connector point in side the battery compartment.
2. Look carefully between the lens and the camera body for any sand, dirt or any damaged etc.
3. Try turning the camera with the lens facing down and shake to dislodge anything stuck
4. Try removing batteries and memory card, wait 5 minutes and refit the battery only.
5. Now turn on camera( with out card ) and see ,if working then fix the memory card & again turn on the camera. If working then fine . Otherwise format the memory card and fix back in camera again & try. Make sure before format the memory card take a back up all photos in your computer then format. If no luck then reset or restore the camera setting by pressing Menu key for 2 sec .. in not done the press both Menu & self time key for 2 - 4 sec.
i hope it will gives you success

I accidentally pressed the formatting button on my digital camera, canon powershot SD790 IS. Not knowing it erases all pictures. My question is can i get my pictures back, and if so how?

The answer is it depends on whether or not you conducted a "low level" format or not. Such a format will actually write over the card making photo recovery unlikely. But with Canon cameras, format is normally a quick erase (which is recoverable), UNLESS you manually check the "low level format" box in the menu (did you do that?). But either way, there are numerous freeware software options available for photo recovery that may work for you.
Take no more pics until you've recovered the photos, take the card out of the camera. Here's some freeware photo recovery software that should be what you're looking for:

Disappearing photos

It is unlikely your images are lost but I would advise not to use the card until you recover them. If you purchase a quality brand flash card reader (eg. Lexar or Sandisk) you often receive an image recovery program with it. You basically plug the reader into your computers USB port, insert the card and run the program to get them all back safely. After that, I would recommend putting the card into the camera and formatting it using the "Format" option from the menu. People often buy new cards and forget to format them in the device they intend to use it in, it is an important step to remember to ensure your information is being safely stored.

Lost all photos

It's no problem at all to get them back. Please see this post for several free software that you can download. You'll need to use a card reader with these programs though:

After you've recovered your photos, consider formatting the card IN YOUR CAMERA. This should help prevent such episodes from happening again. This will also erase the card, so make sure that you've recovered the photos first.

Press menu, then select the tools menu. Scroll down to the selection showing the capacity of your card and select it. Follow the on-screen prompts for a "Low-Level" format.
