After having the same problem as others seem to be having with the Canon S2 IS Power Shot, that being the lcd and viewfinder showing only black when trying to take a picture, I followed the "iris" fix, which did work after the first time. My trouble now after getting the iris fix completed is this: I can only take indoor pictures with it. The indoor pictures are good. Now I can't take outdoor pics. When I attempt to take an outdoor picture, I get a whitewash effect on the outdoor picture, some of the subject is visible, but most of the picture is covered with the whitewash effect on it.
Is there a fix for this? Is this something I could fix?
It sounds like overexposure. If you are in Auto mode, you should have your settings automatically so you shouldn't get overexposure and if you are, you may need to have your camera serviced.
Make sure your ISO is not high, make sure your shutter speed is not long and make sure your flash output is not high.
Other than that call Canon and set up service or get an upgrade through their Loyalty program.

Try going into the review menu, choose setup and then choose 'reset all' This should re-set all shooting settings to automatic and solve the problem. If that doesn't do the trick, your sensor is probably damaged - not good news - sorry
A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras, especially the S2 IS. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open).
To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help. Also pay attention to the blurb there about Canon possibly fixing this for free (for the S2 IS only).
You might have a mecanical problem at the lens. The only way to surely
fix this is at a local electronist or Canon dealer. Trying to repair it
yourself can render the camera unusable and unrepairable.

For your particular model camera, pay attention to the UPDATE intro to the article.
Your camera has the know issue of Stuck shutter, whichhappens after some time (weeks or months) thata camera is notused.
Unfortunately the repair of it requires a complete disassembly of the camera, including the lens, fix it, and then put back together everything.
Definitely requires th skills, tools and experience to do it, so it's recommended that a professional camera repair center is performing this type of repair.
If you look for a reliable and low cost repair service for it, you can look in ebay for such repair services.
Example, look for seller ID Great_items_2004 or with the keywords "Shutter black S2".
There is a battery charge level sensor in the DC/DC internal converter board.
It seems that just started to fail such board.
You can try with other brand or type of AA batteries.
If still you have the same problem, you will need to have replaced the DC/DC converter board on your camera. This means a Camera repair shop service on it.
