Check that the battery is good,,,it may have the guts to power the camera but may not have the power to run the storing and saveing side,, so it shuts down the camera.

The date imprint feature is not available in all shooting modes. These include the Museum or Panorma mode. To turn on the feature if it is off, press the Menu button and then choose the Setup Menu. (The icon is a stylized wrench.) Go to the menu item Date Imprint and set this to Date or Date and Time. Note: the date (and time) will be easier to read if the Image Mode is set to PC screen (1024). Make sure that the date and time is correct in those menu areas.
There is no black and white mode in a Nikon Coolpix L100 camera. You can take a picture and then convert it into black an white through any photo editing software like Adobe Photoshop.
Do what the pros do to avoid this very problem...use a card reader to download to a folder you create on the desktop. Once there, you can send the pics to iPhoto.
Are you sure it's really turning off? My camera goes into a "sleep" or power down mode....a slight pressure on the shutter button wakes it up and it's ready to shoot.
