My P28 bought off ebay did the same so i removed the ram cards and using a artist fine paintbrush brushed wd40(or q20 or any lubricant of this type)into the card slots onto the pins and replaced the memory.Next i removed the cpu cover and then 4 screws holding the cpu heatsink down and cleaned off the heatsink paste from the cpu and heatsink then replaced it with fresh paste and that seems to have worked and solved my problem.Out of intrest the paste was hard and tacky .
Hi all
Just a update,on doing everything i described the freezing on startup reared it's ugly head again.I stripped the laptop down to plastics and cleaned everything and soldered battery terminals and any joints that looked weak but the problem is still there. When it happend again i gave the laptop a light tap underneath around the fan vent and then started it up.It works perfect and when it freezes i repeat the procedure so i can assume it's the cpu joints on the circutboard that are dry jointed but on inspection i cant see any possible way of getting to them so it's live with the problem or sell the laptop if youre getting frustrated.Out of intrest the cpu socket is bolted onto the motherboard(above the fan vent at bottom of laptop) and causes that area to distort and with all the heat dry joints are ineviatable sadly on this lovely machine.

Hi there,
sorry i got to this post so late. you are indeed correct dry joints around the cpu socket (we get tons of these all with this exact problem), this is a well know fault (but you knew i would say that) and has been fixed in the past by reflowing the mainboard, anyhalf decent repair store should be able to arrange this.
sorry this is not much help.
