I was given a Sony PCV-RX550 PC by my sister gave to me some time ago. I was thinking about giving it to my daughter but it is older technology. Is there anything I can do to bring it somewhat up to date...

Upgrading the motherboard and cpu shouldn't be a problem. Sony cases are bought in so they will fit most mATX motherboards. You could buy a CPU and motherboard bundle that comes fully built and tested with memory included for about 100 to 200 GBP Maplin, Aria and Novatech do some good bundles and have a good help service if you get stuck putting it together.

MAXIMUM PROCESSOR UPGRADE ON MY SONY PCV-RX550 NOW LIMPING AT 1.5

At most you could get a 1.9 first gen P4. Add to that the fact that the maximum memory you can install in it is 512MB and you can see that you have an obsolete machine.
Just replace it as a whole, it will be cheaper.

Hi i want to know that if i can upgrade from 256 mb to 4gb Sony, VAIO Digital Studio PCV-RX550

Your manual for the motherboard will tell you how much RAM it will support. If you don't have the owner's manual, you may need to contact SONY, because the additional RAM has to match your motherboard specs.

Graphic card related

I don't think there is a solution other than replacing your graphics card.  The RX550 does not support it. It only support 2.0.
Features
  • Powered by the most powerful GPU- ATI Radeon X550

  • Four parallel 3D pixel pipelines

  • Two programmable vertex shader pipelines

  • PCI Express X16 lane native support

  • Full DX9 support

  • SMARTSHADER 2.0

  • SMOOTHVISION 2.1

    New Motherboard for Sony VAIO-RX550

I just bought the same box, mostly for the case, power supply, etc, to use as a small server.
Three ARE 2 ram slots, but this motherborad IS limited to 512mb total. And it uses SDRAMM PC133 or 100, not SO DIMM - incompatible. PC133 SDRAM 512 is $9 (btw, installing in pairs not required on DDR SDRAM) and even if your existing is 256 & an empty slot, buying another 256 may not work, sometimes brands are incompatible. Just get the 512.

However, replacing the motherboard is your ONE chance to change lots of things at once which may be the best choice at this point. Physical size ("form factor"), CPU socket, memory type & price, graphics connections (AGP, PCIe, or built in) are key factors.

1\ the case fits a "Mini ATX" mother board (mATX). The majority of accessories use PCI lots - sound, LAN, etc. and every mother board will have 3 or more PCI slots. Probably don't need modem anymore.
2\ what CPU does it support. The original P4 1.5GHz cpu is normally a primary expense, but today your P4 Socket 478 is worth $8 (pricewatch.com) brand new. This means buying a motherboard-cpu combo may make sense. While you're at it, get more & faster memory and you'll think it's a new PC for less the $100 unless you go all out.
3\ what type & how much memory it handles & how much you have. Existing PC133 SDRAM is old & slow, about 8x faster SDRAM ddr2-800 pc2-6400 2GB is only $24 and 2GB is about the minimum today. (btw, DDR2 - notice the 2 - IS installed as a pair.) DDR is far from current, but plenty fast and very cheap, just need to balance the memory-motherboard-cpu combo.
4\ if not playing games, the video card is old but ok. It connects via the largely discarded AGP slot. So in looking at a motherboard combo, either with an AGP slot or on-board video is desirable.
