Fridge is running but not cold enough: Start out with the easy stuff first... make sure the lights go out when you close the door(s), make sure the doors are closing properly and the gaskets are closing fully and not torn. Check to make sure the evaporator fan in the freezer is working, this fan blows the cold air around. If the fan is not working, possible bad fan motor - check for power to the fan motor and also check the fan switches around the door openings, ( if your fridge has these switches, not all do ). A common problem cropping up in the last several years has been the air damper not opening up and allowing the cold air from the freezer to be blown into the fresh food section ( mostly on SxS refrigerators ). For many years the air damper was manually operated and now we have motorized controlled or temperature controlled or thermister and electronic boards controlling air dampers, and if this device sticks closed the FF section will normally warm up. An example picture of "one" style and an air damper ( called a diffuser by Whirlpool ).

Next would be to check the condenser tubing, a good place to start is to make sure the condenser coils are not built up with dust!! Make sure the condenser fan motor is also working properly. Check for any "clicking on and off" noises from the compressor, is the compressor running.

The most common fridge "not cooling" problem is a frost free failure. Remove the access panel in the freezer section to expose the evaporator coils. If the coils in the freezer section get plugged up with frost, this frost will block the evaporator fan motor from blowing the cold air around. The fan blade can also hit this frost and either become noisy or stop altogether.

Locating the defrost timer can be tricky.... they are often hidden behind the back bottom corners of the fridge at the bottom, in the last few years the timers have been located in the ceiling of the fresh food section, and some behind the cold control cover. Once you locate the defrost timer, slowly turn the screw like wheel in the middle of the defrost timer with a straight screwdriver until the fridge shuts off. You are now in defrost. If the defrost heater(s) comes on now, replace the defrost timer and defrost thermostat. If the heater(s) does not come on, you can ohm test the defrost heater for continuity or volt test for 120 volts to the heater(s). If you have no power to the defrost heater(s) you can also bypass the defrost thermostat to see if the defrost heater will come on, join the 2 wires together to bypass the defrost thermostat. If the heater now comes on, replace the defrost timer and defrost thermostat. If the heater itself is bad, defrost the fridge with a hair dryer, replace the defrost heater* and defrost thermostat. If the defrost timer seems "hot" to the touch or is noisy ( like a ticking or screeching noise)... replace it.

What setting do I use to make the freezer freeze food

When you are freezing something, set your freezer on its highest setting. However, if you are going to leave your freezer empty for a long time, you should change the setting to a lower one. Here's a great tip for ice cream: place a tub of ice cream in a ziplock bag before putting it in the freezer; it prevents freezer burn. You know when your ice cream gets so cold, it's hard to scoop out? Doing this stops that, it's keeps the ice cream just soft enough for easy scooping!

Model TFH30PRTA NOT KEEPING ICE CREAM FROZEN

Ice cream will get hard when the temperature is closer to - 20 C or -1 F scale. Water becomes Ice at 0 C or 32 F scale.

Ice cream soft means your freezer is not cooling enough.

You were cleaning the coils? Both condenser and evaporator coils? Cleaning coils and then loosing cooling in the fridge is not a good sign or combination. May be there is a freon leak and the seal system is low on freon now.

Call a service tech to check the seal system.

Unfortunately, if it is a leak you may eventually buy a new fridge after spending money on freon fill up, freon system sealant, leak check etc etc... No good news. Sorry

I have a kenmore upright freezer and can't remember which setting it should be on. It has coldest 1 2 3 etc.

I keep min two notches from the coldest setting.A great way to check where you should set yous,is ice cream.Put an open container of ice cream in the freezer, and turn the freezer to coldest. The next day try to scoop the ice cream. If the ice cream is hard the freezer is too cold.Adjust the freezer two notches ,and try the ice cream the next day.Repeat till you are happy with the hardness of the ice cream. It should be easy to scoop but not too soft.

My Whirlpool Freezer/Refrigerator model# ET19RMXGW02 is not keeping items cold. The ice maker is not working. There is frost in on the back wall of the freezer but objects like ice cream are all soft. ...

your evaporator coil behind this frost on the wall is iced up and you cant blow cold air through solid ice, remove this panel and defrost the coil, then check the defrost heating element below the coil, the defrost thermostat located on the coil or the defrost timer itself for being defective

Freezer is not working. Ice maker is working. Started noticing the past 2 weeks that ice cream is melting. Refrigerator is working but not keeping things really cold. The unit is only 3 years old.

ice mker will soon quit as when ice cream is soft the tempt is rising . look for frost build up in back wall of freezer . if so the heaters have failed ( very common ) . they will have to be replaced . there is a new style that replaces mose G E heaters . and they are much better .. mm

The ice maker is making 1 tray of ice a day

There are 3 things needed to make proper ice.

Water, cold, time.

Check the cubes that are being made, they should be the same size crescent shaped. If they are not solid and some are hollow or broken then you are not getting enough water to the refrigerator. This is usually caused by the little valve on your house piping that connects to the refrigerator being plugged with sediment.

If the the cubes are all solid and the same size check the temperature of the freezer, it needs to be below 10 degrees F and works best below 5 degrees F. If it is warmer than that it will only produce ice on a very slow schedule. If you do not have a thermometer ice cream is a good indicator of temperature. If ice cream is hard the temperature is below 5 degrees F, if it is soft you are not cold enough to make ice cubes either.

If all this checks out alright you may need to have the ice maker replaced. the modular ice makers are available for sale at most all part retailers.

Freezer seems as if it is not cold enough

Your sensor is packed in ice and giving false reading (always frozen)

You NEED to defrost. Will take 2hr

Turn off or Pull plug on freezer
Take everything out and put in cooler, brown bags, large bin or boxes to stay cold
Defrost by setting large pail of boiling water in each side bottom of freezer and closing door(s) for 1/2hr
Open freezer, empty pails in sink and use pails to hold large chunks of ice from freezer that will come out easily
Toss out ice chunks
Check sensor to be sure it is no longer packed in ice
Wipe down interior dry
close doors
plug in
wait 1/2hr
reload with stuff you want to keep
Done!
