I went to fill my Hoover Steam Vac and the hole is open at bottom. I went to machine and a black post with a spring on it (reminds me of inside on a pen) was just lying there. I tried to figure out how to attach it back, but I wonder if another part is missing. There is a rubber gasket on the base that it fits onto, but it doen't remove.
That is the valve asm. to release the water when it is depressed when you squeeze the trigger. Best to replace it, usually it comes with a new seal, hard insert, spring and valve. Check under neath the seal to make sure that the tank is ok, if a hole or crack, then replace the tank.

The center part of the valve (stem) pushes up (spring loaded) to release liquid. If it leaks it can (and should) be replaced. Also, check the black valve seal (conical shaped ring around the outside) for cracks or splits as this can contribute to leaks. The entire valve assembly (similar to photo) should be replaced to solve both issues.
My clean solution tank is leaking from the bottom, too. It is not a hose or a valve. The clean solution tank is leaking in-between the clear plastic walls of the solution tank & the grey plastic bottom that are connected, together. I was thinking of caulking it all around the bottom where the clear plastic sides join the grey bottom plastic. I can't get into ordering a new one (spending $) unless Hoover will send me a new one for free. Purchased at Kohl's in Massapequa, NY in June 2008. There's a one year warrantee AND the directions say to EMPTY the solution tank after each use. Which I normally do because the tank runs dry.
make sure that you have filled everthing properly and the hoover steam is in a good condition. or check else is there any loose coonections in the bottom of the hoover, which makes the tank empty. if the problem persists take it to service.
Fill the tank and determine if the plastic is leaking, or if the valves are leaking. if the tank is cracked, it would need replaced. There is an improved design now available.
You may cycle the valves on the bottom with the eraser end of a pencil.
a) make sure that there is not a place for a stair attachment. If
there is make sure air is not leaking through where the attachment goes
on because of damaged or misplaced fitting.
b) some steam vacs leave water behind them and **** up in front of
them. If you just walked forwad with the steam vac nothing would be
sucked into the tank.
c) try taking your finger off the trigger and using the steam vac. If
the tank still empties the trigger is stuck open.
d) try putting clean water in the dirty water tank only and using it on
a dry rug. If water goes somewhere from the dirty water tank you have
a leak.
e) take apart what you can and look at the parts. A good visual
inspection can solve many of these types of problem if you are careful
not to miss anything.
