Odd, its probably faulty, these things are very simple on the inside if you have the skils you could possibly repair it.. althought I've never tryed it myself.
I had a similiar problem and it turned to be a loose connection on the memory somewhere.. becouse it started to work when I got pissed at it and was about to snap it to 2parts (was beding the memory like ( <- like that) well i didnt snap it to two parts yet.. instead I connected it into my pc while it was a bit twisted like ( to my suprise the damn thing worked and I was able to get the files I had put in it a year ago, it hadnt worked before that.
althought my pc did detect the memory but it didnt recognize it
I don't recommend that but yeah It can be a loose connection or something else. well I bought a used one for 5 euros so it might be easyer just to get a new one.Odd, its probably faulty, these things are very simple on the inside if you have the skils you could possibly repair it.. althought I've never tryed it myself.

I think you need to reload windows with a operating system disk. Most times the Factory Recovery discs don't work.
Get a windows operating system disk and just reload windows. The disk must match the Certificate of Authentication (COA) sticker on the bottom of her laptop. In other words, don't use a Windows XP Home operating system disk if the COA sticker says Windows XP Professional or you'll never be able to activate windows.
Boot under XP, go to Dell's website and download the XP driver for your laptop noting where it is saved. Don't install it, copy it to a thumb drive or a CD. Reboot into Windows 7 and then install the XP driver. You'll get a message that it isn't the correct one but choose install anyway. That chip doesn't fully support AERO in Win 7 but will do most everything you will need. If you want to disable the pointing stick on the keyboard, download the XP Dell trackpad software. That lets you go in and deactivate the pointing stick. I find it annoying.
I would like to introduce Windows Password Key 8.0 . it not only supports XP, 2000, and NT, I have personally tested it with Vista Home Premium and Ultimate. It creates a password recovery CD/DVD,USB Flash Drive for home, business and enterprise. It works perfectly to reset your Windows password. You can download it from http://www.lostwindowspassword.com
