Since April 22, 2008; Computer will not play DVD's

My computer has ceased to play DVD's. I have a Compaq Presario w/ vista home software. It had been playing DVD's alright, but suddenly when I inserted a DVD it would not play. What might be the problem?

    When you click start with vista you do not have a run command. Should I click "help support"?

    press start -> run -> and type in services.msc -> on the right side of the list. Look for shell hardware detection.



    right click on it and select start.



    if it doesnt start click on properties and make sure the startup is set on automatic

    oh yeah, on vista, I have vista also.



    hold down the windows key, then press r. then letgo of r and windowskey.

See if it would play regular cd, then see if it would play dvd's. The reason is because most gaming cd now and days are dvd's and maybe your dvd-rom has a driver issue or the laser head isn't reading it. So try that first, then see if the drivers for the cd/dvd rom is working properly in the device manager. It may need a dvd coded software, try installing like powerdvd or something. If it still ain't working, and it can't play dvd's then your cd-drive could be history

Have you tried downloading any free dvd players from the internet? if not then try this one from www.download.com.

Not playing DVD CDs
Hi,

Considering the fact that the dvd gets detected since you are able to see presentations,
it might me the problem of codecs..

Go to the following link and download the codec pack

make sure your windows media player is set as your default player in control panel > default programs > set computer access and defaults.

Things to check
1. See if the drive is identified properly in BIOS, if it is not, reseat all cables and try agian.
2. Can you boot to the drive using a bootable CD (XP CD or such) If the drive functions outside Windows, then it is a software issue. If it doesn't boot to bootable media, then you most likely have a hardware issue.
If you can boot to the CD, then try booting to the safe mode, removing the drive from device manager then remove the upper/lower filters in the registry then reboot in to the normal mode.

Well yes and no. I believe you're asking if you can remove vista to install xp? It is possible to do so however HP/Compaq use a proprietary software to "tattoo" the motherboard which designates the unit as either a Vista computer or Other OS computer. Though it is possible to install and run XP on a Vista machine, complications may arise causing things like the OS to not properly validate and other software related issues.
