This an wire setup gone wrong!
The wire you use to get the internet from on your modem, plugs into I believe a Yellow port at the back of your router.
The rest of the ports are for hardwiring each computer.
So your computer, We say #1, will have a wire from you LAN card at the back of you computer to port #1 on you router.
you will have to go into your windows internet setup to change some settings. So to do this
My computer, Control Panel, Internet setup.Internet wizard setup.
You no longer SAY you use modem for internet, but setup through router.
This will NOT be a new setup but an existing setup

connect your computer to the router and open internet explorer and in the address bar type, 192.168.0.1 and push enter. it might be 192.168.1.1, don't remember. login and setup your internet connection. if you have cable internet set it to DHCP. if you have DSL you will have to get the settings off the providers web site. you can also try resetting the router. with the power on, press the tiny reset button on the back of the router for about ten seconds. you will see the lights go out and come back on. once the router reboots try it again. Good luck.

Why can't I connect to the internet via my router but when I connect directly to the modem, I have internet access

If you don't reset the modem after connecting the router, the modem is still trying to send data to the MAC address of your PCs network card.
You need to disconnect power from everything, then power up the router first.
Once the LEDs on the router settle down, power up the modem.
Once the modem's LEDs have settled down, power up the computer.
You should now be able to access the internet through the router.

The only time this won't resolve the issue is if the PPPoE negotiation is being done by the PC and not programmed into the modem itself.
This is almost unheard of with modern DSL and ADSL modems today, but if that is the issue, you will need to contact your ISP for the information you will need to program the router to do the PPPoE login through the modem and reconfigure the computer to not do the PPPoE authentication any more.

I think you will need to reconfigure the router.
You can access the Internet when you connect the computer to the modem. That means the modem is working fine.
Connect the modem to the Internet port on the router and computer to port 1 on the router. Press and hold the reset button on the rotuer for 30 seconds. Release the reset button and wait for 30 seconds. Power cycle the router and reconfigure it.
Follow this link to reconfigure the router.

Use of router in network

Try reset the router & cable modem. There ia a reset (very small) button on the back of the wireless router & the modem. Disconnect the power cords to both. Use a pen & hold in for 10 seconds (router & modem). Re-connect power (router & modem) & restart PC. If your service still has not returned. Chances are it's your internet provider & not you. Double check by connecting your modem directly to your PC.

Luck!
Mike
