Best way is to hook it up to your computer with iTunes. In iTunes there will then appear the iPod touch on the left. From there you can format it or do what ever you want.

ITouch pass code forgotten?

If you cannot remember the pass-code or password to your new iTouch MP3 player first thing you can do to unlock the IPod is by doing the following: Connect your IPod to the primary computer you use it with (the first one IPod synced with), and open iTunes. When you disconnect iPod from the computer, it will no longer be locked. If you can't unlock IPod using either [the code or connecting it to the computer you use to manage its songs]. . . you can do a Hard re-set. Hold down the screen lock button and the home button at the same time for 30 seconds. You will lose all your stuff (music, videos). You will then need to restore your iPod to factory settings using iPod Updater. Please note that this will erase all data on your iPod. Then you can reset your pass-code and resync the data from the device (or restore from a backup). If you want to change the primary computer that your IPod is associated with, do this: A. Restore your iPod. WARNING: The restore process will erase all your music, videos etc and cannot be undone. All of your songs and files will be deleted. B. Connect your iPod to the computer that you want to be the primary computer. C. Open iTunes and synchronize.

According to Apple, if you have forgotten the code, you can unlock the IPod by doing the following:
Connect your IPod to the primary computer you use it with (the first one IPod synced with), and open iTunes.
When you disconnect iPod from the computer, it will no longer be locked, but you said that was not possible so you will have to do the following to solve your problem.

If you can't unlock IPod using either [the code or connecting it to the computer you use to manage its songs]. . . you can restore your iPod to factory settings using iPod Updater. Please note that this will erase all data on your iPod.
Afterwards, you can add your music and data back to your iPod.
If you want to change the primary computer that your IPod is associated with, do this:
1. Restore your iPod. WARNING: The restore process cannot be undone.
All of your songs and files will be deleted. Always make a backup of your important data.
2. Connect your iPod to the computer that you want to be the primary computer.
3. Open iTunes and synchronize.
Apple also notes that company "representatives cannot unlock an iPod if you forget your combination. If you can't unlock your iPod and you don't have access to the primary computer, your only option is to restore the IPod, which will erase all music and data."

7.Open that up with a text editor (Notepad) and the passcode will be there.

I restored my itouch but itunes still wont recognize it

You may need to reset the driver
and then possibly update your itouch firmware to get it working again....
-Close any other open programs
-Unplug the iTouch and any other NON-ESSENTIAL USB devices from the computer (i.e. PRINTER, CAMERA, etc.)
-Open the iTUNES application and leave it on during this process, you may minimize the program if you'd like though!

-click on your Start Menu
go to Control Panel
click on System icon [computer w a check]
goto the tab that says Hardware
then the Device Manager button (alternatively, u can access the device manager by opening up the RUN command and typing in "CONTROL.EXE SYSTEM" and hit ENTER)
-Under DEVICE MANAGER, click on universal serial bus controlers
to expand the catagory
then you itouch should be in there
it may be under a name like "USB
Mass Storage Device"
then click [up/plus on the toolbar] and choose
the unistall driver option[computer with an X]
(don't worry, your data on the iTouch will be fine!)

-Next plug your itouch back in it should
recognize it
Now then, try to update the firmware through Apple

Applications that i added open then close immediately. I downloaded applications both from the computer and from the itouch itself, restarting, and resetting. Very Frustrating!

When an app closes immediately this is known as the app "crashing." The first thing you should do is make sure that your itouch has the latest software update available. This can be done by hooking the unit up to itunes, and clicking the update button. Also try restoring the unit with itunes. You will lose all of the data on the itouch, so make sure you have all your data backed up with itunes. If you have any further questions feel free to contact www.wiredextreme.com.
