Question about Compaq Evo N410C Notebook
Please, i loosed my Evo N410c dock to a friend,
now my OS is having problem, can i get to boot XP from my Scandisk U3 flash drive? Because i no longer have a CD rom, not even external
I just bought a Compaq Evo N410c used. Seems like a good unit, only it came with XP SP1 and
I wanted to upgrade to SP3. I don't have the docking station but I do have a SONY DRX-S50U USB DVDR drive which works fine with the laptop except I couldn't get it to boot from the XP CD - until I went to HP's Driver download page for the Compaq Evo N410c and downloaded the BIOS update (the first one on the list, the windows based one). I downloaded the file to my desktop, ran it and when it rebooted I went into the BIOS and my Sony drive was now listed in the bootable devices section. I was then able to boot from my XP CD and upgrade to SP3.
Remember when you are doing a flash update make sure you are connected to AC power. Interrupting the flash update process will turn your laptop into a brick. (This is why I am always nervous about updating BIOS on any machine but in this case it was worth the risk).
hitesh281's procedure describes how to turn your USB flash into a bootable device however it is important to note that the machine you are using must also support booting from USB devices. All newer PCs and laptop do, older ones will require BIOS update like mine did.

This will get the drive back, but you WILL lose the data. If you need the data. I do not know the answer. Repost your question to go to Sandisk site below
'.............U3 smart drives come preinstalled with the U3 Launchpad
which emulates the Windows OS start menu, and controls program installation and
hence facilitate the portability of software. However, if you would like to use
the USB flash drive or memory key as a pure normal USB mass storage device, or
you don't use operating system that U3 supports (i.e Windows XP and Windows
2000 operating systems), or you simply feel that U3 Launchpad and applications
have bugs such as unable to eject due to locked files in use, consent on
privacy and automatic installation of U3 software and pop-up etc, you can uninstall
and remove the U3 Launchpad from the USB storage device.
To remove and delete the U3 Launchpad, you need to download
U3 Launchpad uninstallers or U3 Launchpad Removal Tool that remove the U3
Launchpad and re-configure the USB drive to be a single mass storage USB drive.
Currently, U3 Launchpad uninstallers are only available for and must be run on
Windows XP or Windows 2000 machine. When uninstalling, the U3 smart drives USB
device has to be plugged in with U3 Launchpad running.
U3 Launchpad Removal Tool for SanDisk USB U3 devices can be
downloaded here, http://u3.sandisk.com/
WARNING: U3 Launchpad removal is irreversible. You won't be
able to install U3 again. Beside, backup your data before begin uninstallation
process as ALL data will be erased.
UPDATE: It's impossible to reinstall U3 LaunchPad........."
