DSC-S500 Zoom goes out wont' stay Red light comes on in front

I hope you can help. When I push the power button, the screen lights up, the zoom comes out and immediately goes back and turns off. There is a little red light that comes on during this action on the bottom front. I cleaned where the battery goes. I just put in new batteries.

Thank you for your help.

Mine turns on then immediately off, like the batteries were nearly exhausted and the camera decided that the "on" was the last straw.  But occasionally, RARELY, it would work fine.  Now it's dead again.  Fresh batteries didn't help.  I tried removing batteries and holding down Power button, then again both buttons, for 15 seconds each.  I wish I could "reset" or reboot it.  It seems the camera may be expensive landfill.

I had the same problem with my Sony DSC-S500, I called Sony for a solution and they told me to take the batteries out and hold down the power button for 10 seconds, after trying that the camera would turn on the off again. I decided to hold down the power button and the button that takes the picture for 10 seconds and after putting the batteries back in the camera, it worked fine. I think that the picture button was stuck. Hope this works for you.

DSC-HX5, Lens is Stuck in Zoom out mode. Turn On works but screen stays black. Automatically turns off after 10-20 seconds.

Since there is nothing you can do to fix this at home you have 2 choices, replace the camera or send it back to the manufacturer for exchange (very expensive)

Wont zoom in or out message reads turn the power off and on again can access stored pics but wont take new ones sony cybershot dsc w35

Is this camera only have a digital zoom? If it has an optical zoom as well, you could have a setting that is set to ignore digital zoom and because your lighting conditions, zooming in and out is not currently possible because the aperture can not be opened enough to light you take a picture without being blurry. The auto focus would be taking priority in stopping you from taking a picture.
Just a hunch.

ZOOM problem

Most likely there is a problem with servo drive for the lens and camera functions. The fix is to replace the complete processor board including the servo drive electronics. After replacement the board must be tested and calibrated.

Call Sony to see if the camera is worth to have serviced.

Turning camera on

Take it back to where you got it or send it to Kodak because this should be a warranty issue. I repair these camera's all the time and it should like 1 of 2 things main controller is not making proper connection or a cold solder joint and the connection is intermediately connection making it work once in a while I hope this help you decide on what to do.
