Question about Canon PowerShot S500 IXUS 500 Digital Camera
I guess the most logical thing would be buying a new one. But, let's suppose I want to repair it myself and save some money.
Two main problems:
I was walking along a river and I slipped on the rocks and the camera slashed and fell into the water. I quickly removed it and let it dry. But it is now showing no sign of life.
The screen is cracked.
I live in Brazil, I asked a quote to the qualified Canon Assistance shop and the gave a price of aproximally $ 500.
If I did it myself, buying the parts, will I really save some money?
Thanks in advance
If the battery was in there, it probably shorted something out.
if the fuses saved the power board, you can replace the LCD easily, just get the old one out and look at the manufacturer (Sony or maybe Sharp) and get one on Ebay. Open the camera and if it was fresh water, just dry it out with a hair drier on low heat, or dunk it in 80% alcohol and let it dry. Getting the lens clean might involve removing the lens and getting in there with lens tissue. Most PC boards are alcohol proof as they are cleaned in the manufacturing process in the same manner. Youll have to find the microfuse that blew and either short/bridge it with solder or replace it. If you bought it with a credit card, sometimes they double the warranty length or offer repair service. $500 US sounds high, but Im not familiar with your camera.
