Hi ginger,
Suggest you back up you're personal data to either a CD/DVD or mem stick.
Windows in general will not allow you to downgrade. It does not matter what version you have. If you put your windows CD in your CD-ROM & boot the Win XP CD you will have to format the hard drive. Only than will windows XP install. Everything on your PC will be erased. If you’re sure this is what you want than put your Win XP CD into your CD-ROM & restart your PC. You should see; to boot to the CD press any key...... (Press the space bar). Win XP should start to load. If windows does not start to load, restart your PC & press the F8 key every two seconds. This should bring up a boot menu, use your up & down arrow keys & highlight the CD-ROM drive than press enter. Windows will begin to install. Choose format when shown on your screen. If you choose to re-install windows you will end up with double folders & that is no fun.

Good Luck!
If I can be of more service, just post back & let me know how thing went.

Mike

I want to get rid of windows vista and install windows xp

I suggest to upgrade to Windows 7 instead of downgrading because Windows 7 has better performance than Vista. But if you still want to go to Windows XP you have 2 choices.
The first is to format the drive where Vista is installed and to install fresh copy of Windows XP.
Second choice is to install Windows XP as second OS and at the end of the installation, at activation step, you have to choose activation by Phone. Then you should call Microsoft Helpdesk and provide the code of your Windows XP to the operator and tell him that you need downgrading Vista code. Then he will guide you to the rest of the activation and the downgrade of Vista.

Good luck!

I have HP dv6701au laptop. previously it was loaded with Vista, but now i have installed XP. The problem is that i can't get the appropriate drivers for my laptop. i had already asked the same from HP...

Before downgrading from Windows Vista to Windows XP you should always confer with your computer's manufacturers website to look up your model and see if they support the downgrade. Often times the only way for you to downgrade is to have it done before receiving the computer, since a majority of the hardware on the laptop is made specifically for Vista and is not backwards compatible. Looking on the HP website, I see that they only offer a very limited number of Windows XP drivers for your system, which tells us that downgrading is not possible.
I would recommend that you consider not downgrading but rather upgrading to Windows 7 as it is a much more stable and functional OS than its predecessor Windows Vista. You can even run Windows 7 in Windows XP compatibility mode so you can enjoy the benefits and upgrade of Windows 7 but still have the Windows XP feel and functionality. I will be writing a How-To/Tip on Windows XP Compatibility mode today so you can be on the lookout for more information on that.

Downgrading vista to xp

Now you need to find a Windows XP install disk that can match the licence number printed on the sticker at the back of the laptop and reinstall XP using your serial key.
You will have to download and install also the XP drivers, you find them on manufacturer website.

Vista downgrade to XP

Good day

If you have all the Windows XP drivers for your PC, then it is not a problem to downgrade to Vista, although i will not advise downgrading, as Microsoft mentioned that they are only going to release the last Service Pack for XP, then there will be no more Service Packs for XP, and only Support for Vista.

Hope this helps you to make up your mind

XP Downgrade

You need to start windows setup straight from cd. To do so you may need to change the boot sequence from bios. You will also need a bootable windows xp cd (not the upgrade version). Setup xp as new installation. Ensure you can get all necessary drivers and software for windows xp.

Hint: Vista works fine if it has enough ram memory, and you wont lose your valid licence and all software provided with vista.

cheers
