My computer power button lights up and lights show on top row for a few seconds, then shuts off. i have a acer aspire 4520 and have had no troubles until today

You can try to drain the power or remove the battery. You can also rechare the battery to check if it still have the same problem what i suest for you to do is to contact ACER tech support for further trouble shootin

My acer aspire 4520 starts the comes off a few seconds after pressing the power botton
hi, yes the laptop will shutdown if you press power button.
it send command to OS that it required to shutdown in emergency so it shutdown in force. so do not shutdown by pressing the power button. use start> shutdown option.
i hope this will resolve the issue.

Try this.

Unplug both AC ADAPTER and remove battery.
Press and hold POWER BUTTON for 30 seconds.
Plug in AC ADAPTER.
Turn on.
After log in, place battery in.
