Depending upon your Internet setup connecting your XBox cannot give you Internet access to XBox Live. For a least complicated method, you need to connect the XBox to a DSL or cable modem that has Internet connection via your Internet Service Provider.

This works for me.
In order to connect your XBOX 360 to your laptop (if the laptop is connected via dial-up), you'll need a cross-over ethernet cable. It's a special type of ethernet cable, which is typically the same price as a regular ethernet cable, but it allows two devices (in your case) to communicate with each other. Then, you'll need to configure your laptop to allow incoming connections via your Control Panel -> Internet Connections preferences.
plug xbox in via ethernet cable, then open network connections. choose the internet connection and the wired network connection. once both highlighted right click and choose bridge connections. then u might have to change settings on xbox but u may be ok.
I assume you have a crossover ethernet cable. put the my network places on your desktop. right click on desktop/properties/desktop/customize desktop/tic then on the network places icon on desktop right click/properties right click on wireless and bridge devices they are now sharing the same ip be sure and remove /delete bridge when not sharing as the ip will stick forever likely. that should do it if you need more info /open my computer and hit help and search for internet connection sharing as the firewall may need to be configured.
