Question about SuperMicro X7DAL-E Motherboard

1 Answer

SuperMicro X7DAL-E will not power up

Please HELP! I've tested PSU and already RMA'd board once. All I get is a weak "erk" when I try to power up the system.
X7DAL-E-O Dual LGA 771 board
2-Xeon 5410
4 GB Crucial FB PC2-5300 RAM
Apevia 600W "Dark Side" PSU
Tagan A+ Monolith Full Tower case

All components are brand new. Only fly in the ointment that I can think of unless somehow I missed a jumper is that the PSU only has one 8 pin 12V connector for CPUs (Required according to documentation). Board has 8 pin socket for CPUs and additional 12V for PCIe slots but docs don't say it is required. If it is, where do I even find a PSU that has both?!?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I am using the same board with a PC Power and Cooling 1 K Watt power supply which is a little high in price and no longer available. I have been using PC Power and Cooling since the 1980’s and have had few problems and they have always kept up with the latest power standards if not exceeding them. The replacement power supply has even more power.
However, you can find adapters to use 4 pin IDE drive Power connectors for the 4 and 8 pin power connectors. PC Power and Cooling and Cables To Go both sell them. That is the cheapest fix for you but I would also use the PCI-E auxiliary power connector.

Go into the BIOS settings under Boot Features.
Make sure

Now the most important one.

This setting allows you to decide how the system will react when power returns after an unexpected loss of power.
The options are Stay Off, Power On, and Last State
Make sure this setting is Stay OFF!!!

Supermicro x8sax memory bank issues

The X8SAX motherboard has 6 memory slots. Try booting with one memory stick in each slot to identify which memory bank (dimm slot) is giving you issues. If you are able to boot off of a good slot, check the BIOS version to make sure you have the latest installed (R 2.0b). It can be downloaded here: Super Micro Computer Inc Products Motherboards Xeon Boards X8SAX

If you are unable to get into the BIOS at all, check the warranty status and submit an RMA request to Supermicro:

The machine will only post to BIOS and boot with 1 CPU installed. If I put both CPUs in, it won't post. both slots works, since it WILL post with either one of the CPUs in either slot. Thanks!

The CPUs must be identical. Also, the memory scheme is interleaved, so you must install two modules at a time beginning with DIMM #1A, then DIMM #2A and so on.

Make sure that the BIOS is version R 2.1c (latest):

No powerr

If the led comes on for an instant and then faints quickly, leaving the TV with no led, no blink code, and no power at all, then the fault is usually concerning the PSU board, or the power connection. If you already replaced the cable, the next step is looking for bad solder joints on power cord connector, and then testing and eventually replacing PSU board.

X7dal-e pci express

The problem is not the board, it is the implementation and the limit of the PCI-e lanes in the CPU.
Solution, Do not use slot 4.
For add in cards use old PCI-X cards at 133MHz.
They are cheap used, 64 bit, and are 8 times faster than PCI.
