I purchased a GE Microwave from Wal-Mart 03/23/'07 at the cost of $103.20. Wouldn't you know one month after the 1 year waranty is up it won't heat. It makes a sound louder then normal and more of a grinding. I checked the trouble shooting section of the owner's manual and found nothing pertaining to what it is doing. Suggestions?

I junked it and will never buy another GE product. The repair people cost more per hour and that was their advice also. I purchased another microwave with an extended warranty. Lesson learned.

Throw the thing out and go out to Wal-Mart and get you a new one. These things are so cheap now a days that fixing them would outweigh the cost, especially since new ones are more energy efficient and have more bells and whistles.
You have not mentioned the make and model of the oven. Any way you can
check if there is a fuse between the highvoltage terminal of the
transformer and the high voltage capacitor. If it is blown off youcan
replace it by similar value. Still it is not heating you have to
replace the magnetron.
one would surely assume that a product would last more than 5 months. of course you know not to put metal in a microwave, so the real question is, have you ever cooked bacon in it? I can assure you that this is a very bad idea, as the grease gets sucked up into the fan and distributed all over the sensitive circuitry inside the unit. mine actually caught on fire while cooking bacon, so now we are back to the skillet. in conclusion, the micron is probaly fried in it and it is not worth fixing. chunk it and get a new one.

You have the option of using their knowledge base to see if any of the posted questions will help you. Or, you can send an email to them to address the issue and you can call them directly. If you decide to call, I would recommend the "GE Answer Center", or the "GE Warranty Management" links. Since you just purchased the item recently, they still may honor a replacement or free repair if there's something wrong with the appliance. Since you can't find your receipt, your serial number may come in handy to prove this point. The first two letters "FR" indicate that this applaince was manufactured in February of 2008 which makes it about 3 months old. Most manufacture warranties are for one year. With this information and a store number of the Wal-Mart where you purchased the item from, you shouldn't have any problems resolving this issue. I hope this information is helpful to you.
Normally you can strip and sand the old paint, get it squeaky clean, and use appliance paint.
Yes indeed it is a heat-resistant enamel. You can get it from appliance parts stores, Wal-Mart, or home centers, etc.
BUT if it's under warranty I would call GE Customer Relations with your model and serial numbers. They're at 1-800-386-1215 (8-6 ET) and I would also suggest you ask them for a referral to a GE-authorized servide center in your area.
