No sound since installing xp

I installed windows xp on my gateway solo 2150 laptop and now I have no sound. The sound driver listed that doesn't make any sound is a unimodem half duplex audio device. Any idea how I can get sound on my laptop again?

I downgraded from vista to xp and now I can not get sound. According to a driver scan my computer (dell inspiron 531s) has unimodem half-duplex audio device microsoft 7/1/2001 5.1.2535.0 The scan says driver is up to date, but on my computer under control panel/sounds and audio device/ it says no audio device. Can someone help me fix the problem at low cost?

The half duplex audio device is probably your telephone modem. Anyway, do you have two systems without sound? A Dell and a Gateway?

Do you have any unrecognized devices in your computer? Right-click 'My Computer', choose 'properties', then the 'hardware' tab, then click the 'device manager' button. Yellow circles indicate devices with no driver installed.

Is the gateway model number correct? Drivers are here:

but I can't find your model.

I just upgrade my laptop also. The fix seems to be this Driver Wdm4148 you can finf it here http://rapidshare.com/files/4436678/Wdm4148.zip.html You have to open Device Manager select your sound device it should have a ? since it's not working. Select update driver don't go through the windows update and select Install from a specific location. Now browse and find where you downloaded the file. I recommend the desktop Open it until you see the internal Wdm4148 and install. You'll have to do it twice for some reason but it works :)

Unfortunately your best bet on your Inspriron 531s is to go back to Vista. According to Dell, this system was specifically setup to run Vista and, therefore, no XP drivers are guaranteed to work on this model. Most of the time for onboard devices, if they are not listed on the site, they are usually native to the operating system and do not require a driver download. Dell does, however, have some XP drivers for this model listed on their support site here

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?os=WW1&osl=EN&catid=-1&impid=-1&servicetag=&SystemID=INSP_DSKTP_D531S&hidos=WW1&hidlang=en

The only audio driver listed is for a Creative Labs X-Fi sound card and I am not sure that is what you have. Your best bet is to uninstall your sound card drivers, reboot, then install these. Good Luck
