Question about Garmin iQue M5 GPS Receiver

3 Answers

I found a iQue M5 in my office with a dead battery. I ordered one, but also had a prompt that the backup batt. was extremley low & 48 hrs. of charging would rectify the prob. The unit worked great in the cradles, but immediatley died upon disconnect. Curosity killed the cat and I proceed to perform surgery seeking the backup battery to order as well. Needless to say, when I reassembled the unit, it was DOA! Can you repair (price?) or offer a quick fix? I have tried the eset button. Thank you. Why won't unit power up even in cradles? "Surgery" went well! Any firmware or software available?

Hi, well these are extremely delicate instruments, indeed. When the battery goes Flat, it can and does cause a plethora of problems compounded by the fact that the "Internal" battery was also somewhat "dead'. When this type of thing happens it can screw up the contents of the internal memory. This in turn causes the device to refuse to power up properly.
But, IF you have replaced successfully BOTH batteries, and you are sure they are OK, Then maybe it will be possible to update or the like via, the internet, if you can hook up to a PC, and run the Garmin software and see if it will update and this may remedy your situation.
However the most cost effective and practical way to effect a repair with a device such as this is to simply return the unit to a local Garmin center, and they will perform a quick, inexpensive repair, with a warranty too.

Short backup time

Suspect battery failure/faulty cell in a batt
Remove batts and check outside unit
charge up to around 2.27V/cell then check discharge on each batt (12V car lamp is good dummy load)
faulty one will be obvious.

MAKE SURE YOU ARE VERY CAREFUL WITH BATTERIES, THEY ARE VERY DANGEROUS, AND ALWAYS LIVE!

Check you manual for safety procedures, BEFORE working on Batteries.

hope this helps

Garmin iQue M5, Not aquiring satellites

Two possibilities - Antenna (in power cable) or electronics related to antenna. First, do a hard reset. Place the pen top into the RESET hole for 3 seconds...
Next, when the unit is powered, page over to the screen showing satellite signal strength....

If NONE appear within 1 minute (and you are outside and NOT under trees), you have an antenna or antenna interface issue.

Garmin WILL repair the unit for 3 to 4 times its value... A 265WT GPS is cheaper, faster and more accurate. The IQUE is no longer worth repairing....

Active Sync USB OK but City Navigator won't find device.

Somewhere I read that if you do a soft reboot to the iQue M5 it will connect to the City Navigator. I did this and it seemed to work, although between downloading and uploading I had to do it again. The process of loading map set (entire US) took an extremely long time (about 3 hours). Also, if you try to receive maps, waypoints and tracks from device all at once, it chokes.

Make a sprite backup to an SD card before changing battery. If you lose data just restore it from the backup.

Garmin ique 3600 won't turn on after battery goes dead

I had the identical problem; I called Garmin and a new battery = $50, installed only @ the factory. I tried buying one off eBay, but those batteries spec out ok but don't have the pigtail leads required for my M3 (probably would work just fine for M5). I soldered on the pigtail from the old battery from my M3, then put it all back together. Works! However, the new battery ultimately drains down over several hours so when I'm not using it I have to trickle-charge the thing constantly. Bottom line: I suggest sending your M3 back to the factory for a new battery rather than trying to replace it on your own.
