The outside of the top freezer of my refrigerator has been getting very, very warm. It remains warm for maybe 30 min., then cools off, and then gets very warm (almost hot) again about an hour later, only to cool off again. The kitchen is air conditioned and cool 24/7. The Frigidare refrigerator (FRT 2105AWB) is approx 6 yrs old. What should I do?
Re: The outside of the top freezer of my refrigerator has...
That is usually caused by the evaporator fan not running. It's located under the fridge accessed from the back behind the cardboard cover. The fan should run when the compressor runs.

It looks like you are getting frost/ice build up in the air vents( freezer is what cools your refrigerator side. If the ice blocks the flow up no air can travel to the other side). You removed the blockage by defrosting it but it will probably come back if the door does not seal properly. The only moisture you can introduce to the freezer is from outside...
Are you sure it is a refrigerator and not an oven?
The outside generally warms up while the compressor is working - or at least the area where the condenser is. If the cooling circuit isn't working then the outside doesn't get warm and the inside doesn't get cold but if the outside is getting warm it can only be because the inside is getting cold - or at least should be.
I expect the defrost heater which should operate only briefly after each cooling cycle to melt any frost that has formed over the evaporator has, because of a fault, remained switched on causing the oven effect. This will force the compressor to work harder and cause the outside to be warmer than usual.
I suggest you contact the repair shop as soon as possible. The fridge will probably be cooler switched off and loaded with ice from the freezer or frozen cool-packs.
I doubt the internals of your fridge are easily accessible but if they are (safely) disconnecting the defrost heater could effect a temporary solution.

Many times a freezer and/or refrigeratordo not work right because of a dirty condenser coil...there are also many otherthings that can go wrong.

By design these units either have compressor tubing (Return side) or have a heating element in these areas to prevent condensation on the refrigerator doors. However, on units where they use the refrigeration tubing for this purpose when you notice that it is much warmer than usual it is a sign that the condensor fan in the bottom rear of the unit is either clogged with lint or not running. UNPLUG THE UINT then you should first try using a crevice tool and clean the lower / rear coils and fan area. You most likely will have to remove a few screws to gain access to this are by removing the soft cover. Once you finish cleaning check the temps about 30 minutes after you restart the fridge. It should be warm but not really warm to the touch.
Your freezer coil needs a good defrost. You are getting only a little bit of the ice off. It stops cooling because the ice acts like a insulator over the coil so it is unable to cool. Was to get this done is to empty it out and shut if off and leave the door open or maybe a hair dryer or even so warm water. I hope this helps.
The freezer is usually cooled by the compressor, the fridge is then cooled by an evaporator fan motor ($30). If this fan seizes or slows down then the fridge warms up (it sometimes starts squealing before this happens). It could be that your drain hose is clogged or frozen. Maybe the temperature adjuster go bumped.
If you think it is the evaporator fan motor:
Check to be sure you can get a replacement fan first, they last about 4
- 5 years. Can get from a parts supplier or electric motor company.
UNPLUG fridge. Located usually in top of freezer behind a vented cover
plate. Remove cover, remove screws holding fan in, may have to cut
wires. Replace with new motor, make sure the fan pushes air into the
freezer area and doesn't spin backward drawing air from the freezer
area.
We were informed that because of a lot of power outages and surges that the freezer was in constant defrost mode. Since the freezer had been in constant defrost for at least 5 days, we were told that the condenser would probably short out. Even though the fridge was 7 years new. We decided it would be cheaper in the long run to get a newer more energy efficient one, because we didn't know what other damage had been done and if fixing everything would just be too expensive and it could quit before everything was fixed.
