Ensure you have the most up-to-date drivers for your i1420: http://graphics.kodak.com/DocImaging/US/en/Support_Center/Document_Scanners/Departmental/i1420_Scanner/Support/Drivers_And_Downloads/i1400_Series_Scanner_Drivers/index.htm Looks like v3.09 is the most recent. If you are unsure of your version, download and install v3.09, if your drivers are out of date, the install will update your drivers. Test the scanner using the Scan Validation Tool (SVT). This program should be located in the Kodak folder in your start menu. SVT will test the scanner's functionality at a basic level alleviating all third party software variables. Please consult your owner's manual if you are unsure how to initiate a scan in SVT. If the 1420 scans perfectly then you need to contact IRIS for support: http://www.irislink.com/c2-2365-189/IRISPowerscan---High-Speed-Scanning-Software.aspx
Check your scanner software settings. It is probably set at duplex ever time you start to scan. That is why you get two pages for every pass, the front and the back. You must place the document in the feeder in a way that the front side of the document is page 2. You may want to flip it next time you scan. So the main question is why there is black line from top to bottom? That is because there is a piece of dirt stuck on the glass of the scanner. You see, this scanner actually does two scanning when a page runs through it: the front and the back in duplex mode. So there are two scanners in side the box. The front page scanner apparently is dirty and needs to be cleaned with clean cloth and lens cleaner.
Have long experince with PixEdit program using Kodaks. PixEdit usually comes around it after a firmware upgrade on the scanner. Not sure about this specific model but at least OK on other models of Kodak.
Try scanning a double sided document in duplex mode. Reverse the page and scan again. Make sure contrast/rightness settings are okay. If one side output is still not okay, then it possible that the lighting has failed. Either loose contact or failure of the lamp. Some scanners have LEDs and some have a lamp.
