The membrane gets dirt under them and shorts out the keypad,you may as well just replace the control board which includes the display and keypad on the same board
I did what devilsrule below suggested--the pad "locked" then I repeated the process with the door closed and now the microwave works!!! omg I was ready to put it out at the trash and go buy another! Thank you!!!--Annie Hoke
I am sooo happy. This article saved my sanity. Held the clear/off button down with the door open. The obnoxious beeping is gone and it is locked

Hi, where did you buy key pad?, I have similar issue for GE PVM1870SM3SS model.
I put in a brand new control board and am still getting the same message.. Any more suggestions?

Mine too! I solved it, and hopefully you can too. I hit the clear/off button and held it down for several seconds with the door opened and closed. It cleared it up and it works again, hopefully forever.
