Frigidaire Dishwasher: FDB1500LFCO, was quiet but now it is very noisy. It's not dishes rattling around or the arms hitting something in the lower rack, it's a mechanical noise - any ideas as to what it could be and how to resolve it?

It is very possible that something could be obstructing the main pump. But, first. Does your dishwasher fill with enough water? When full, the water level should fill to just below the heating element. You can check this by waiting for the fill cycle to stop and the normal wash cycle to begin. Open the door and check the water level. If your dishwasher isn't getting enough water, you could have a bad fill valve, or the inlet water line could be kinked. If this isn't the case, then suspect that you might have a clogged pump. Food particles such as popcorn kernels, orange or lemon seeds, small chicken bones and glass are notorious for getting into the pump screen area and obstructing the water flow (some of the other items I have found are labels off jars, bottle top seals, twist ties, rib bones, hair scrunchies, and yes - even band-aids!). Even though some dishwasher manufacturers advertise some amazing capabilities of their dishwashers, you still need to scrape your dishes of all food particles as much as possible. This does not mean you have to pre-wash prior to loading them. Anything that doesn't get dissolved by the wash cycle and detergent will end up sitting in the pump well. If the pump isn't able to pump enough water, your dishwasher will fill normally, but the spray arms will not turn, detergent does not dissolve and your dishes will not come clean. To get to the pump, you need to remove the lower spray arm and the coarse screen (located directly under the lower spray arm). The pump well should be located under the coarse screen. Look for anything that may restricting the water flow. I hope this helps and it's easy fix for you.
SOURCE: middle arm of dishwasher not spinning
I'm the one that reported the same problem in November as "Guest". I fixed mine finally. I removed the middle arm again and noticed that the holes that spray a jet ot water causing the arm to turn aren't the ones on top. On the bottom of the arm there's a small hole at each end. I looked and one of the holes had a small piece of crud in it. I had to use the tip of an ice pick to dislodge it back into the arm. I then ran water into the arm several times hoping to get the item completely removed. I never did see anything come out but I then ran water through the arm holding it so the water could run out one end. The piece didn't show up in the hole again so I tried washing it to the other end. It still didn't show up so I guess it must have washed out the first time. It's been 3 or 4 weeks now and the arm is still functioning perfectly. Hard to believe that one little piece of trash can cause so much irritation. Good luck on this being the problem for others.
SOURCE: Dishes not clean. Lower spray arm possibly not moving.
Remove the lower basket so you can access the lower arm.
Does it spin freely? If not, remove and clean the rotating point. Make sure the spray nozzles are not clogged and there as no chunks of stuff inside the spray arm.

Yes there is the Water Div valve, it diverts the water between the wash arms.
SOURCE: My dishwasher is not washing dishes on the top rack...
HI,
The top rack is not cleaning because of low water pressure from the wash motor to the upper spray arm.
Assuming the top spray arms are clear of debris, remove the lower spray arm to access the wash motor. Remove the 4 torx screws and the filter (accumulator assembly). Remove the torx screw and the inlet protector that covers the chopper assembly. Make sure the chopper is not broken (broken chopper will fill with debris and block water flow). While holding the chopper blade, reach inside the "D" shaped opening on top of the motor and spin the wheel/motor by hand in each direction to make sure either the chopper gear or the motor gear that drives the chopper is not broken. Replace the chopper if necessary . If the motor gear is broken, replace the sump and motor assembly . Remove any debris from the sump area in the process.
You don't have to shut the power off to the dishwasher because the door will be open, but if you feel more comfortable, do so.
thanks,
