If you are at home, your network settings have to be a "Private" network. Go into the control panel > Network and Sharing Center > Look under the text "View your active network" and click on the blue text. Make sure you choose "Home Network".
Now, click on Advanced sharing settings, you will see it to the left and make sure that network discovery is turned ON. save your changes and exit.
Now, bring up a browser window and don't worry if it doesn't connect yet. Once the window is up, look tot he right and choose the drop down menu "Tools", scroll down to the bottom and choose "Internet Options", Click on the tab "Connections", look to the bottom of that window and clicl on "LAN settings", When that windown opens make sure that only the top box is checked and that all others are unchecked. The only thing you want checked is "Automatically detect settings".
Now, reboot the machine and see if you have internet access.
