First go to this link and download the manual, and software. It explains everything very well. Basically it is very similar to a very big USB jump-drive, or flash drive, with more "bells and whistles"

Hope this helps. Any questions please contact me.

When I plug in the usb connection for my smartdisk firelite 30 gb, it is not being recognized by my pc

I am sure tha that you have verified that the FireLite has power and the USB connectors are secure both at the Firelite end and the computer end.

If all that is in good order, then you can follow these instructions.

When you plug in your drive you need to do the following to see if the drive is connecting to the computer.
Right Click on "My Computer"
You will get a menu, chose "Manage"
You will then get a Computer Management window.
On the left side of the window will be a menu.
Under the Storage section, chose "Disk Management"
This will open in the right side of the window and will show you your main hard disk, CD-Rom disks and any other disks connected to your computer.

If you see your Firelite hard drive, then it is connected. The drive may need to be formatted. This window should tell you if that is the case. If you see the firelight and it shows that the disk is unformatted, you can right click over the large section on the lower left window which is located to the right of the smaller area that describes the disk. You will get another menu that will allow you to formate the disk. You can also assign or change the drive letter assigned to the Firelight using that same right click menu.

I hope that you have found these directions helpful. Please contact me if you need clarification on any of the instructions I have written here. If the Firelite is not visible on this Manage Computer Window, then you may have a defect with your Firelite Drive.
Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank You,
Brian

I am unable to deteckt firelite usbfl880

Make sure it is connected DIRECTLY to the laptop and NOT via a usb HUB.

Also make sure you use the cable hat CAME WITH IT and not one that looks the same.

If it still does not show up and is no longer under warranty then remove the drive from its enclosure and connect it directly to a suitable PC internally. this will confirm if it is the drive or just the enclosure that is at fault.

If it is the drive you can always get another one and place that in the old enclosure..

If it is the enclosure then these are pretty cheap to replace and you could probably do that yourself.

Instructions for using the firelite

First thing to do is locate the drive. Right click My Computer and select Manage. Expand Storage and select Disk Management. Here you will see your new drive and you have to assign a letter to it. Example "D" as "C" is your main drive. Right click on the new drive and choose Format. If you are going to use it with a MAC as well, you should choose FAT 32 but if only for Windows, choose NTFS format. If it tells you that the disk is in use and asks if you want it formatted the next time Windows starts, select yes. I hope this helps, any questions, feel free to ask.

AUTOMATIC BACKUP TO EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE (FIRELITE)

The first thing that comes to mind is the Firelite has become full and can not accept any more backup data.
Delete the data on the Firelite and try running your backup again. If it works then that was the problem.
The backup software should have a configuration setting somewhere that allows it to automatically delete older data and keep it from filling up.
